A student asked me today about how one 'shows' rather than 'tells' in writing. It is a good question and it is something that comes with practice. One thing that I can definitely say, is to never 'catalogue' or list what is being expressed in writing. Use of the five senses and figurative language, such as simile, metaphor and personification are important. Evoking emotions is part of this. These are things that I cover in my poetry class. The transition between telling and showing is to take the 'telling' of something and transform it into a poem or other write that has most, or at least, some of these elements. A little detail is good also, It gives the reader a clearer idea of what is being said. This is important in imagery.

Examples of 'show', not 'tell' in writing --
Tell -- It is a hot day.
Show -- A mirage of steam rises from the asphalt where children play.
The cracked earth looks like a baking cake.
