“And so now we come to the crux of the matter. You want to talk to me about my family line do you, because I have a few of my own questions on that subject,” Selene said.

Darius sat back in his seat and placed his hands together in a parody of prayer. The gesture wasn’t lost on Selene but she kept her calm.

“Yes, I know that my mother was an accomplished witch and our religion didn’t follow protocols prescribed by any church, and I also know that they were killed on someone’s orders,” Selene said; she remained outwardly calm.

“When do you think that your skills in this witchcraft business will be available for use in the organisation that has sponsored you since your parents were put to death?” Darius asked the question as though he asked for a tardy study piece to be handed in by his student.

“Oh I don’t know Darius, perhaps around the time I get to see my sisters again?”

Darius smiled at her over the tips of his fingers and Falco had to shake his head because he could swear that when he looked at Selene she was blurred.

“You know that your sisters are both dead so why do you play this game, Selene?”

“No reason in particular, Darius, only for the simple fact that I can. I was actually still hoping that I was wrong, that you were not the cause of the deaths of my entire family, but I had to confirm it. The loyalty I had for you must now be withdrawn, I feel. I’m afraid that you are not the benefactor that I had always believed you to be.”

Selene then took her leave and Darius stayed where he was as she left.

Falco shook his head again as the door closed and he was puzzled not only that Selene had left but that Darius had allowed her to leave with neither threats nor angry exchange.

It seemed that the closing of the outer office door was a switch that snapped Darius out of it... whatever ‘it’ was.

He realised almost right away what she had done.

She had bewitched him and that meant he had to add another to the total of Wolves that he had to watch his back with.

Vladimir came back then and he saw Darius’s bemusement but didn’t ask about it.

Chapter 26

Selene awoke with a start. It was still dark and she lay in her bed wondering for a moment about what had woken her.

Her face was wet with tears and she touched the fingertips of one hand to the wetness on her cheek.

She had not cried for decades – why now? She wiped at the tears and stared at the ceiling, thinking.

Then she remembered her dream.

Three little Wolf girls and their mother, all yanked from their beds in the middle of the night to answer to crimes that she didn’t understand.

The girls screamed in terror as their mother, fully Wolfed, stood in front of them to protect them from the Wolves that smashed down their door and had come to administer swift and terrible retribution in a revenge attack.

All Selene could remember from that night as the youngest of the three was that their mother took out at least two of their attackers before she was overwhelmed by the weight of numbers and was torn apart even as the girls were being dragged out of their beds and out of the bedroom.

But Selene knew that Belinda had been calm and had gone to her death with dignity.

The dream was not quite how Selene had seen it when she had made contact with her mother’s spirit back where they had lived, in the forest that Selene had visited a few weeks before her acrimonious split from Darius’s organisation.

Why was her dream different to her experience in the forest where their home had once stood?

Then she realised that the dream had been one that she frequently had when she was still a child.

It was based on a memory that had been from hers and her sisters’ perspectives. She dreamed what she had been told of that night after they had been adopted.

Perhaps her dream had been influenced by her sisters’ tales of their memories of their mother as they tried not to forget her.

The girls had all been in bed when Belinda was slaughtered.

Selene put her fingertips to her throat and she remembered the burning sensation she had felt as she experienced her mother’s death first-hand at the hands of Vitya – the Wolf that she had recognised yet hadn’t.

Then she realised that she did know Vitya, or at least, she knew his son, Vladimir, and then she recognised the reason for the dream.

What did she recognise in the dream? It is about Vladimir, but in regards to what? Still very hooked, and at this point, totally clueless about Selene's dream. Can't wait to see the coming left hook.;-}

Excellent story @michelle.gent

Great story

Michelle, this part is simply gorgeous, despite the fact that this chapter is not fun and rather more sad, but I liked its performance. That's how you described Selena's dream.

Interesting. Thanks.

Brilliant !!. Every word is well chosen, every character is very well thought out..the fiction, the story..Excelent ! :x

The account of Belinda's death is quite wonderful. Selene is still haunted by the memories in her dreams. She is unable to let go memory of her mother's death. She would be looking for Vladimir's mother in next episodes I think.

Thank you for providing pleasure of reading.

The character of Selene in this story is very impressive. The reason of selene's dream was the death of her mother that she was still not forget. This is very interesting part of this story.
Thank you for writing this. Stay blessed.
