Recycle, Re-use, Reduce - my little bit

in writing •  7 years ago

I was reading @molometer's post and the discussion that followed, between @rebeccabe and @molometer and it got me wondering what I do to help/harm the planet.

I've been seeing reports, lately about the damage crypto mining is doing to the planet - one article says mining is Killing the Planet

Over the years, I like to think we've got better at recycling, re-using and reducing, and of course I'm all for saving money, especially if it also saves the planet.

But gone are the days that people sniggered at the 'hippy type' bemoaning, 'Save a tree, man!'

This country no longer mines for coal. We have wind farms dotted across the countryside. Wave harvesting is being looked into (tidal energy farms) and solar panels cover the landscape like giant sunroofs.

What we do in this household -

LED bulbs throughout, including the outside, security lights on PIR so they turn off after a while.

We cut our energy consumption by £70 per month on average over the year, just by having a multi-fuel burner in the house, which means we don't have the central heating on as much.

The washing machine is on cold water feed.

We have a new(ish) boiler and a new hot water tank, both energy efficient.

We dry clothes in the house rather than using a tumble-dryer when the weather is bad.

The heating is off (not just 'down') at night when we're in bed.

I grow my own veggies and fruit in the garden and greenhouse.

We have koi carp and I'm looking into using the water from the pond in a hydro-experiment for the veggies next year.

I have lots of water-butts collecting rainwater so my garden can be watered throughout the summer without using hosepipes.

The big pond is also a nature-reserve and is coming up to frog-spawn season. The ponds work in a couple of ways for planet preservation - the obvious, nature reserve and the second one, our granddaughter will watch the fish and the frogs rather than watching the television.

On the other side of that coin, unfortunately, we off-set all of that by having cars and bikes.

Sorry planet.

I say that is it necessary to 'reduce' the nukes and the 'guys' who control them. Unfortunately, all these efforts that people like you and me make to reduce the negative impact on the environment can be to no avail if someone has the means of turning a large part (if not the entire) of the planet into a radioactive desert with a push of a button. It is like the principle of Chekhov's gun: If there is a rifle hanging on a wall in the first act of a play, it will be fired in the second act." Meaning that if the psycho politicians have such weapon, they will use it sooner or later, and then it's happy nuclear winter everyone.

Excellent post dear friend @ michelle.gent, I've been reading the damage that we have been causing humans to our planet, among that report I saw the damage of cryptography, in this situation there are new companies that are working with new technologies more healthy, I was looking for the link but I could not find it.
The truth is that the exchange must start from home, there are many things we can do to contribute to our mother earth, the care of water, electricity, cultivate our own food, recycle things, the disposal of batteries, anyway.
Thank you very much for sharing this post that invites a reflection.
I wish you a wonderful evening

Thank you for taking a look.

It's worrying, what we're prepared to do to the planet.

I'm reminded of a meme...

And a saying:

We don't inherit the land, we borrow it from our children.

You are very right dear friend, at the rate that we are going generations to come will receive a planet made a chaos

It's a never ending battle protecting mother nature. You can go to some places and see how beautiful nature can be and then other places and see the destruction that humans have caused. Glad to see you're doing more than the average person.

Thank you. I'm not doing enough... none of us are.

Agreed, some of the destruction might be beyond remedy, but we gotta do our best

good reflection on the topic of climate. I think that technology has a positive impact on the climate. The question is how to use them. For example, I read that some co-distributions use the heat allocated by their data centers for heating houses. This is a positive example.
In the evening I saw an interior with Neil Degrass Tyson. There, answering the question about the climate, he said that there is a book. In this book, in order of decreasing efficiency, measures are proposed to combat climate change for different people with different social abilities. I do not know what kind of book it is (he did not remember the author). But I am convinced that if children from school will be taught the basics of preserving the environment - this will tell a positive effect in the future.
Thank you

Again, I'm doing my bit. My granddaughter is enjoying the garden, she watches and listens as I teach her like my grandad taught me - how to plant and take care of the seedlings, help them to grow and then to harvest their rewards.

Nothing comes easy, nothing is free, but some things are worth every moment.

You put it nicely!!
Unfortunately we look at our short term convenience & not the longer term world convenience ....

It's a never ending battle protecting mother nature. You can go to some places and see how beautiful nature can be and then other places and see the destruction that humans have caused.

I'm all for saving money, especially if it also saves the planet.

If everyone can have this mentality then we can actually save our planet
✋ i choose to also play my part

a very good way to save the world, if only everyone on this earth thought the same as you would be the planet earth would be fine without any word of destruction.

And you were doing so well too, oh well -brumm brummmmm!
Also, @cryptofunk wrote a piece a few months ago about hydromining :https://steemit.com/mining/@cryptofunk/where-do-cryptocurrencies-come-from-hydrominer-ico. A greener solution to crypto mining?

I just saw this ... thanks for the mention @michelle.gent . I wonder if @molometer has seen this.
It sounds like you are doing what you can with your home.
Gardening is great ... I enjoyed this post and am resteeming now.
This has been a hectic week for us ..

This earth damage is no longer a secret. But more than that. Earth damage seems to be a trending topic. I am from Indonesia and in my country also happened earth damage caused by mining activity. If given permission I want to kill a ruler in the name of prosperity.
This I show you the documentation of earth damage in Indonesia

Just some days back..where I stay the temperature spiked to 40 degrees Celsius, then it dawned on me that global warming is real. The felling down of trees and other environmental factors in the quest to make more money has made mankind vulnerable . We need to stop. The question is are we willing ?

I remember the film 'The Day After Tomorrow' when the world froze.

The scientists explained it.

Global warming warms the ice caps, they melt, dumping fresh water into the oceans, diluting it. That water runs around the planet in the gulf stream, cooling the planet, forcing it into the next ice age.

Global warming doesn't mean warm - it means a new ice age.

Great exposition, it made me to read around on the subject matter and I found this www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/global-warming-overview/
You could read that too in your spare time. Gracias

you are a very precious person on this planet. because just few people think this way. I am very proud and appreciative. hopefully be a spirit for me to better keep the planet.
Thanks for sharing my friend @michelle.gent

a beautiful post that could be an inspiration for our beginner stee

Hello Friend!! we must all put
our bit to save our planet.

Nice post. Really open minded story. We really should take care our planet

a beautiful and comfortable city, hopefully have a chance to visit it

Pretty much the same at our house. The on demand hot water heater has cut our electric bill to under $100 every month. Unfortunately, the power bill goes up anyway. 🐓🐓
