Persephone felt her consciousness fade as she was led out the room by Lilith. She remembered very little of the trip back to her cell. She heard the door slam as she stumbled her way to the bed. Leaving her alone to her thoughts once more. Coldness washed over her as she laid in that cot, like she had been dipped in an ice bath and left to freeze. She grew even weaker, fighting the urge to slip into what she was sure would be the endless slumber she dreaded so much. She didn’t feel ready to meet that fate. Don’t close your eyes, don’t close your eyes. She repeated the thought in her head as she clung to her last thread of hope. The thread she knew was breaking as she slipped further and further into unconsciousness. She couldn’t stop it this time. She relaxed her shivering body, and let the darkness fall over her.

“Persse! My sweet Persse! You cant let this take you yet.” James spoke out.

She felt his warm embrace once more, she knew it must be another dream, but didn’t care this time, seeing James even in her subconscious made her feel as if wings had sprouted from her shoulder blades and she was walking on air. hearing his familiar voice gave her a sense of peace and calm in this dank unforgiving prison.

“James I love you I really do, but I’m so tired. I cant take much more of this hell, I’m losing dear. I don’t even know what to do. I don’t see a way out of here. They stole what shreds of humanity I had left, and with those shreds was my will to live.”

“Persse, remember your promise” James begged.

“Screw the fucking promise James, I’m done here, what is left for me to live for. things are bad James, really bad. I have no idea what comes next here. What’s going to happen to me? It could be way worse, and I just don’t think I have what it takes to make it through anymore of this. I just wanna be where you are. I wanna be with you now.”

“Persephone. Get a grip. You still have every bit of yourself, no matter how they try to burry it. You are still the woman I love. You are the one who held my hand on the darkest days. You stayed with me till the end no matter how it hurt you. Remember how many times you told me to not give up? It wasn’t a waste of breathe darling, I held on so long because of you. Don’t you think I wanted to give up? Don’t you remember how much pain I was in through all the treatment? All those body aches and all the pain. I’m telling you it was all worth it just to be alive. Every labored breath was worth it. You are worth it.”

“Damn it James, why do you do this? What’s the freaking point? There is nothing for me”

“Believe me Persse, there is. Besides I’m not ready for you to meet me here. Not just yet.”

Persephone’s eyes sprung open. The searing pain in her arm felt like wildfire, unable to be put out. she looked to her wound, the dried blood tugged at her skin making it irritated and itchy. She walked to the rusted sink and attempted to clean the burning wound. She figured the cold water would help ease the burning but the relief was brief and temporary.

Persse hurriedly shut the tap off and darted to her cot as she heard the locks rustle about. The door flung open and in entered Lilith, accompanied by two other Keepers.

“Well, looks like you survived the day kudos to you.”

Persephone knew it was Malory. Her snide comment made the wildfire in her arm grow until it devoured her entire body in flames. The rage the resided in her left her almost incapable of forming words of a reply.

“Malory, I intended to do more than just survive.”

Lilith lifted her hood and for the first time Persephone got a good look at her. She had a face to match her voice. It was soft, with subtle features of a life hard lived. Her hair was a deep black, which flowed flawlessly with her dark tan skin. Yet her expression showed deep disapproval.

Persephone knew she shouldn’t have replied with such sarcasm, and instantly regretted her comment. Forgetting what she had told herself what seemed like days before.* Compliance.*

The other Keeper then spoke. “Is that a threat. We don’t do threats well here darling.”

Persephone knew this voice as well. It was the same man who helped take her hostage just days before. He moved in closer to
Persephone and latched onto her already soar arm.

“I swear If you get at funny ideas, I will put a swift end to your life.”

Lilith stepped forward towards Persse, shaking her head vigorously. Persephone caught the queue and knew not to speak.

“Now Charles, you know I need her alive.” Malory said. “don’t damage the goods too much.”

Charles took this as his moment to shine. Persephone however felt nothing but shear terror. He struck her stomach, knocking her to the floor instantly. Blow after blow and kick after kick, Persse fought with all the might she had left, but nothing was compared to the strength that Charles unleashed upon her. He was ruthless. His once anger seemed to bubble into psychotic rage as he beat her with no mercy. Persse lay on the floor helpless as endlessly the devastating blows struck. On the verge of seeing stars once again. All Persephone could hear was the sound of Malory and Lilith begging him to stop.
