Introductory Thoughts

It's been so long I've not been writing this series about my own thoughts and perspective towards some random questions, quotes and situations that I'm facing. I knew it was never my talent to be a motivator, a good writer or a good organizer with thoughts. Since it's a platform to write anything as long it's original and real, I think this is a good place to voice out what I can.

"Which is worse, failing or never trying?"

This is one of the most common question that you will get in any public speaking club meeting for their impromptu topics session. I think everyone would be expecting the answer "Not Trying", and wanting to listen the speakers "I am glad that I tried" experiences in their lives. Isn't it boring or somehow... Outdated?

So, few days ago I was attending one Area division contests, and I've listen to few great speeches from great winners from different clubs. I manage to recall some of their answers for the question above.

  1. Kentucky Fried Chicken had failed more than 300 times to achieve the greatest formula for fried chicken. Therefore, hard work and trying again are crucial for a big change.

  2. Realizing that he wasn't doing well in his studies made him to make a choice to try putting more effort led him to achieve a better grade.

  3. Constantly being single led him to not fear the chances that he would take to confess to the girl that he had a crush on, since he was being rejected so many times (such humour got him the first place).

Ever wonder why

Have you ever wonder why people tend to put "never trying" and "failing" together, and set them as a question? The answers are very subjective, depending what situation that you're caught into. While listening to all the speeches, I somehow I felt that the reason to put them together as a question is because there'll be something to lose and there'll be something to gain within that choice of "trying "and "not trying".

What will I lose?

If I tried and fail, I'll lose something that I've been working hard on. Counting the heartbreak that I would be facing after that. I may not be that bold and tough to face what I've lost and drowning into the failures and feeding my own self-esteem.

If I never tried, I'll just lose an opportunity. If it's a minor thing, I am pretty sure that it doesn't bother much. Somehow I believe that if we lose one opportunity, we will create another new opportunity for ourselves. It depends on how crucial that the subject would affect our lives.

What will I gain?

If I tried and fail, I'll gain experience and a lesson to improvise. We humans are very adaptive with changes. I believe that our minds are wise enough to absorb everything we went through, especially tough times.

If I never tried, I'll gain leisure and extra time for doing something matters more. Or, realizing that actually it's not what I am passionate with. I always wish that I could try learning art to pursue my dream to produce fashion. But until this day and this date 2018, I have not been close to anything related to the fashion industry, not to mention, art. I think the art side of the fashion industry isn't my thing now. Now I love to be in the warehousing industry. I am spending time on something that works in my life.

Conclusion

I guess we are smart enough to evaluate which choice is more important to us. If failing may take all of us to nowhere, I rather not trying a single thing. If never trying would bring me guilt for years, I would do what I should do. Everything seems to be pretty easy if we get to realize the cost of our choice, I guess.

This reminds me of contemplation I had almost 3 weeks about Fear Setting. Specifically the act of considering the benefit of an attempt or a partial success against the price of the Status Quo.

Pit the least optimistic outcome of something we plan to do against the least pessimistic effect of doing nothing. Then expand from there. "What if I Actually succeed?"

There are no such things as a "wasted" attempt because even the worst outcome gets us data that we can use to improve next attempt. fun fact, thats how Elon Musk thought when his rockets failed in the beginning.

Our definition of Failure has to shift from what the rigid outdated curricular system thought us. What they think is "failure" is actually insanity, because "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results". even so, its what the school wants us to do. "Keep your head down, memorize this, and sit through the test... for the 53rd time"

Hence why the question is in itself erroneous. There is no "failing". Every unsuccessful attempts pushes the odds of success upwards. A 0.1% odd will get 1 succeeded attempt by the 1000th try, each learning from the mistake of the last "failed" attempt.

My friend used to say
"I treat life like a series of experiments."

Seeing life that way changes your definition of "failures."
There are no failures, only lessons.

exactly! true death is stagnation. As long as one is moved, is moving, he cannot call himself a failure.

Nice sharing :) think and say is always easy , when really do it is different case.

Very interesting thoughts !

I often see, that when life forces a new path on people they discover new things they were never aware of. By choosing not to try a new path, you miss out on the unknown. My usual advice for people is to try new things and if they don't like it, just go back. Paths go in both direction, the hard part is knowing when to turn around.

Dare to fail = doing #YOLO the right way!

Not young enough to Yolo anymore D:
