WWDC 2018 Comment Day 1- June 4

in wwdc •  7 years ago  (edited)

This will be my comment thread on WWDC 2018 Day 1. I'll be doing this every day if I have time. Watch the live stream her: https://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2018/. I'm not a professional commentator, so please excuse my mistakes. Feel free to help if you want to. I can't do timestamps cuz my computer is messed up and won't show me time for some reason. If I do times, its central time. Show up for @foxon though.

To read this properly, set it by age and then go to the bottom and start reading from there.

53:20 - group facetime..... well, I'm glad they finally got it? Can I install it on android, or should we all install hangouts still?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

1 ) Apple started with a great intro. Funny too. Talking about developers as a wild breed of animals and talking about the evolution of them. I like it.

2 ) Developers have made over $100 Billion from the App Store.

3 ) Apple took a jab at android. Pointing out that only 6% of android users are at the latest android version.

4 ) iOS 12 will be focused on performance and will be abvabile on all device that iOS 11 was supported on.

6:35 - they love to site OS stats to make fun of android, but then move to customer satisfactions as their goal.... which one are customer's buying? It's hard to compare two operating systems when one is locked to certain hardware and one is open

5 ) iOS 12 will increase CPU usage to max when its needed as quickly as its needed.

11:00 - I notice all the demo vids of apps have the notch. There've been rumors of more notch devices coming

6 ) Apple is focusing on AR.

7 ) New app, measure. Lets you measure the size of stuff (shown off with a suitcase). Seems pretty nifty, but how accurate is it?

16:46 - Was going to talk shit on usdz.... but I can't. That's some good stuff

that sample app is dooooope!

8 ) Muliuser AR. AR Kit V 2 for developers. I haven't checked out AR kit yet, but I might dive deeper into it with these announcements.

12: 23 PM Central Time

20:00 this is what lego was always meant to do with computers. I can see this going far

9 ) Woah, that sample app. They showed off AR capabilities and games might get so much better and use a lot more AR.

These guys are playing AR games together, not gonna lie, this is something I will use. Might have to purchase an iPad if this is they type of stuff that people make.

Lol theres grown men just playing games on stage while looking at a lego set.

10 ) Search suggestions for photos. The search feature was already pretty good(at least for me) and its supposed to get even better.

11 ) New tab in photos, For You. Suggestions and recommendations for your photos.

25:15 - so they got Google photos stuff built in?? snoozer. They jab android earlier, but they liked the notch enough to "borrow" it, and now they're doing google photos like it's a big deal

12 ) Share your photos with with friends from an event you were at so you have all the photos from that day. Not bad.

13 ) Siri shortcuts. Sounds like If This Then That with siri instead of Alexa or Google Home. They showed off siri connecting to the tile app with a command you make.

28:30 - it's a lot of the stuff I do with tasker, but automated for non-nerds. I hope android steals this stuff!

14 ) Shortcuts app sounds like Apple's version of If This Then That.

The logo for shortcuts actually looks cool. Uses siri colors and is a S.

I dislike this. If This Then That is so much better. I won't be using this.

15 ) News stuff. I'm not gonna be too focused, I prefer google news. Apple won't get me into their news ecosystem.

35:25 - are they being boring and lame on purpose to set up something cool? Why are people clapping so much to have news in the stocks app??

16 ) Stocks app changes. The lines that show how things are doing for the day. And they are adding apple news to stocks. I understand why, but any stock professional will not use this but will rely on something better.

36:30 - literal "whooooo" going on for the stocks app being available on the ipad? This has got to be a setup. Can't wait to see what the cool-bomb is

Stocks goes to iPad. How about calculator?

38:20 - Finally, carplay can use a decent navigation app :D

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

17 ) Yay, I can use goolge maps and Waze with carplay.

18 ) Limit distractions and focus. I actually like this. Maybe I can stop watching 10-20 hours of Netflix a day.

Do not disturb during bedtime sounds good. No notifications show up during the night. I know I respond to notifications when I get up at night.

Do not disturb at location. Sounds good, I think it you could already do it with If This Then That.

40:50 - this DND stuff is still very boring and something they should have already had. If they want notifications to not suck, steal android's

The cool bomb must be coming soon

oh, ha, grouping and swiping.... they did steal a big chunk of android's notifications. Good on Apple!

19 ) FINALLY GROUPED NOTIFICATIONS!!! You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this. Look at my ipad, theres like 20000 notifications from the news app and I had to swipe them all away individually. Should have been there already.

42:55 - Spending a pretty big amount of time on the our ability to see usage statistics to make App Limits seem less lame. Might turn out to be a popular feature tho

I've seen stuff from Amazon and samsung that offer similar app/children configs, but this is more powerful and baked in. Android should steal this one!

20 ) App limits sounds good. Will have to use it to stop my netflix addiction. They need to add a hard limit which will make it very difficult to reaccess the app.

21 ) Time to spy on your kids with activity reports.

Parents can also limit stuff on kid's devices. Sounds good.

22 ) Tongue detection for anomojis, sounds weird. Plus more characters.

Memoji- customizable anomojis. Sounds like Bitmoji.

Currently showing someone make their own Mimoji. I know some people will be using this all the time.

47:20 - meMoji... animoji.... I just can't care. It looks cool. Think Mii on iOS, but it can tell what your facial expression is and if you're sticking out your tongue. So Mii + Snapchat. Will mean a lot to the selfie-obsessed

Sounds like something you'll be on 24/7 foxon.

23 ) Camera effects. Android has had that for a really really long time.

1:43 - makes sense to tout the app store. That's always been their real advantage in my mind. Apple users like to spend

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

24 ) Group facetime. You can facetime with up to 32 people. Not bad.

Showed Craig talking with some more people. It was definitely more than just one person.

People who are speaking get their tile made bigger. Actually really nice.

You can make ur anamoji show up in facetime. They made Tim Cook show up on the facetime too.

and with animoji..... gonna be some chaotic meetings coming up :D

58:10 - Apple watch time!

25 ) Apple watch. Maybe a new one.

26 ) Watch OS 5.

Activity competitions with friends. Samsung Health already had that.

Yoga workout. Lol, wot?

27 ) Walkie talkie app on the watch.

Works like a walkie talkie.

I got burned out on PTT years ago. It's reminding me of Boost Mobile's "Where you at dawg?" campaign :D

28 ) Third party apps on siri watch face.

29 ) No longer need to say hey siri. Just raise your wrist and siri will start listening for the question.

30 ) View webpages on your watch thorugh webkit.

31 ) Podcast app coming to apple watch.

32 ) Now they are demoing the new app features. I won't bore you guys with the details of that.

was hoping watch would be over by the end of my vape break. Seriously not interested in watches. Interesting contrast to all the App Limit stuff

Waiting on the end of watch stuff. I don't like smart watches(prefer nice looking analog watches).

Lol there was this really awkward moment with the demoer talking with their kid with walkie talkie.

33 ) Students can add their Student ID to their watch.

Its only in certain school though, with just a few school right now.

34 ) Pride edition watch bands.

35 ) Dolby Atmos on the Apple TV.

1:20:00 - apple tv time... still don't care
seriously, everbody, just plug a computer into your tv and forget all the tv add-on gadgets

My pi is more powerful than that apple TV for a way lower price.

1:24:00 - Ok, having all the live channels from charter and whatever is pretty cool, but I'd rather not see them be in walled gardens. If it's on the internet, just let me have it with whatever device.

Never heard of charter. ATT already has a fire tv app and ipad app so I'm set.

36 ) Haha. The announcer left space for applause after the words : "it just works" but there was no applause.

37 ) Ariels- according to @foxon its just the windows 10 sign on screen, and I agree. Its just videos of places of the earth. Now they tell where its at.

38 ) Onto the mac now. Finally stuff I'll enjoy.

1:30:35 - macos time. Time for @rishi556 to lose his mind!

39 ) macOS 10.14 will be called Mojave.

40 ) Dark mode comes to the mac. Took a while. I'm not the biggest user of dark mode, but @foxon has really tied to get me to use it. I might use switch to it.

It'll match up with my space grey mbp.

41 ) XCODE GETS DARK MODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

42 ) Dynamic desktop. The background changes throughout the day. Sounds cool.

Desktop stacks. I'm gonna need to use it. You guys don't wanna see my desktop. Things will be stacked up how you want.

43 ) Finder changes. Gallery view. Gives a very large preview of whats currently selected with the thumbnails of the all the items on the bottom.

Quick actions let you quickly edit images. You can rotate, and markup.

You can edit items in quick look. Its actually pretty cool. Markup and rotate images, trim videos..etc.

44 ) Better screenshots. Easier to edit them.

Take a video of the screen. Cool feature that I"ll definitely use.

45 ) Continuity Camera. You can use your phone to take a photo and instantly add to documents. Pretty neat but requires you to have both iphone and mac. I have ipad, will that still work?

46 ) News comes to mac. Google news is still better.

And the stocks app. You have the internet, no need to use these.

And home. I don't use apple home so no use for me.

47 ) Security and privacy is a big focus? Remember the root thing not eve half a year ago?

Camera and microphone are finally protected.

48 ) Mac App Store announcement. Maybe its the one we have been waiting for.

So far its just a redesign. Still the conference hasn't ended maybe they will still do it.

Microsoft will bering Office 365 to mac app store later this year. Its great when people clap for a competitor's products when you have something similar that nobody uses (word vs pages.. etc)

49 ) Metal (the graphics api) is going to get better. External GPU support is added.

50 ) Machine Learning. Creating ML will let developers train machine learning models. Built in swift.

51 ) No combination of the mac + iOS.

macOS is getting UIKit though.

So porting will get easier.

52 ) These things are coming this fall, and betas for developers come later today. Not bad, I might try iOS 12 beta.

53 ) They ended with a video of people's experiences with family members who are developers.
