Vince McMahon Announces XFL 2020

At 3pm today announced that he is a sole investor re-launching the XFL, to begin play in 2020. A clip of the announcement and further details provided by Darren Rovell here: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22213241/vince-mcmahon-gimmick-free-xfl-return-2020

Vince emphasized that the league will be fan-oriented, asking for feedback and promising to give fans more of what they want to less, and less of what they don't. Thankfully, he specifically pointed to less commercials and a shorter halftime break as possibilities.

He announced they will begin with 8 teams playing a 10 game season, with 4 teams making the playoffs.

The other exciting thing for me was his mention of shorter games - aiming for 2 hours. Frankly, NFL games just take too damn long. To commit 4 hours to watching a game that only has 10-12 minutes of action game action, is an incredible waste of time. People just have shorter attention spans now.

Again, this is a tremendous opportunity for Vince and his league. They will be small and agile, able to adapt quickly to changing consumer tastes and technology. While the NFL is a behemoth, locked into long TV contracts and labor agreements, getting them to change anything is akin to turning around the Titanic. The XFL will be able to simply do the opposite of what fans hate about the NFL, and quickly gain a following.

If they sign Kaepernick, Manziel, Tebow and RG3...all the better.
