The implications of Yawning

Yawning is one of the involuntary actions of man, just like blinking, hiccuping and sneezing. It is an action that involves one opening the mouth widely and taking a long deep breath usually when the person is tired, and it is usually accompanied by pandiculation (a stretching and stiffening of the torso).

Even though it is an involuntary action, it has some implications which would be explored below.

It is contagious
It should be noted that yawning is very contagious as you can definitely be influenced to yawn if someone close to you yawns.

It shows that you are tired
Yawning is one of the signs that shows that you are very tired and probably need to sleep.

It is a sign that you are bored
Studies has shown that it is nearly impossible for you to yawn during a time you feel interested in something, or a time when something exciting is going on. In line with that, people mostly yawn when they are in a less stimulating environment and everything around is boring.

It should be noted that this is a disadvantage especially when you are discussing with a very important personality, especially one that is not understanding.

Suppressing it is bad
Yawning has some health implications, and it should be noted that whenever one feels like yawning, suppressing it would not be a good idea.

The process of yawning removes debris from your palatine tonsils which is good for your body.

It equalizes the pressure in your inner ear
One of the health implications of yawning is the fact that it opens your Eustachian tube which helps to equalize the pressure in your inner ear.

It helps your lungs
Another health benefit of yawning is the fact that it helps prevent your lungs from collapsing, and it also helps with breathing by renewing surfactants in the lungs.
