If you saw our post What is YouTube Engagement, and Why Engagement On Your YouTube Videos is Important?, we talked about the things that YouTube considers "Engagement" and what makes engagement so important.
There are a handful of things that constitute engagement on a YouTube video:
- How many people are subscribing to your channel after watching - See post here
- How many viewers share your content
- Number of likes and dislikes (who is liking it is also important)
- Number and quality of comments
- Viewer retention
To sum up the importance of engagement on your YouTube videos, it's one of the key factors that determine how high YouTube's algorithms will rank your video. I'm not just talking about ranking in search either. Even more important is how often your videos are being recommended to users after they finish watching a different video.
How to increase YouTube engagement
Above, we listed five things that you need to focus on when it comes to increasing your video engagement. In the upcoming posts, we're going to address those things one at a time, so you can learn how to increase all five factors of engagement. This post is focusing on getting people to click "Like" on your videos.

Getting likes and dislikes
How do you get your viewers to press the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" on your video? We have a few ways that we have found add to the number of likes we receive. Remember, a thumbs down is still engagement in YouTube's eyes! Engagement is a good thing!
Give your audience what they want
First of all, in order to get likes, you need to produce great content. Make videos about things that people are searching for or videos that your subscribers are asking for. Make sure you include a lot of valuable information in your video.
If your video is titled Traveling in Mexico With A Dog, make sure that your video is about that topic. Don't have just 30 seconds of a 10-minute video on your title topic. Try to stay on topic as much as possible! In your video, try to answer any questions that your viewers might have about what it's like traveling with a dog in Mexico.
Include pop-ups with a "like" animation
In the parts of the video where you feel that viewers are going to be the most entertained, include animations of "Like" button being clicked.
Your goal isn't to manipulate viewers into liking your video. Your goal is to get the viewers who actually do like your video to remember to click the "Like" button.
In this video of ours below, you can see a screenshot of what one of these animations could look like.
Call-To-Action
At the end of your video, you want to put a call-to-action where you'll ask your viewers to do something. Since this post is all about getting more likes on your videos, you're going to want to ask them to click "Like" if they liked your video.
Furthermore, if you want to, you can ask them to click the thumbs down if they didn't enjoy your video. Remember, in YouTube's eyes, a dislike is still engagement! We haven't been asking for dislikes in every video, but we have done it in a couple of our Tangerine Travels videos.
Honestly it's getting interesting, following your guides alone is making to feel like a whale on YouTube already... Lol
Title and content really matter, their was a time I was searching for a video on YouTube. The links that was suggested only have the title of my searched topic but the content was totally different to what I was expecting, you can imagine how pissed I was.
I have subscribed to one of those three Chanels before, but I clicked on unsubscribe immediately for such a great deceit.
We need to learn that too as steemian, the use of titles and tags must match the content. Not that the title would be America and you will be talking about Nigeria....smile
Thanks @communitycoin from bringing this helpful tip to us.

Title and content do matter a lot, but your videos aren't going to rank for search terms if you don't properly tag them and include your tags in the description.
Anyway, check out that guide. We have a very useful, free tool in there that really helped us to launch our channel.

Likes and dislikes are quite a definitive factor that defines the success of content (videos in case of you tube).
On the other hand comments are quite subjective and thus cannot be directly counted towards it's success but in my eyes they are probably the most important metric that can define a long term sustained viewership and usually includes some of the most loyal followers.
Once again this post was not too big and yet packed with quality information, so thanks a lot :-)

I think the three should go together. Likes, dislikes and comments.
How will you feel if all you get on your steemit post is just 100 nice post by you and the stuff like that with zero or little upvotes, I sure you won't happy with it. So, also on YouTube, everything is counted together to rank you.
I think he has been explaining this for the past few days now.

When your YouTube videos get a lot of comments, that definitely boosts it in YouTube's algorithms. However, they can tell the difference between good comments and low-quality/spam comments.
With my knowledge, if I had to choose the biggest factor for YouTube ranking your videos high, it would be audience retention...meaning how much of your video your audience is watching.

I consider comment just as one of the metric in array of other important metrics. I just specifically pointed out comments because they tend to come from people who are more involved in your content.
They also serve as critique of the content and provide feedback. Without a good critique no content creator can keep producing content that could engage audience over a sustained period of time and thus I also come back to audience retention.
The title of the post was 'Increasing YouTube Video Engagement'. We have a few things to choose from - Likes, dislike, comments, etc. I also choose to specifically mention comments here because they seemed pertinent to this particular post. You tube rankings are extremely important for a vlogger, but I am just talking about engagement here and not rankings (I also understand that one affect the other.)
I think I should have mentioned all this in my first comment, peace :-)

Yeah, I complete agree with you on everything you said about comments.
This post was dedicated to getting engagement in the form of likes and dislikes. Our next posts will be dedicated to getting shares, comments, and higher audience retention.

Thanks and I appreciate your understanding. I thought maybe there was not enough on comments in the post so it felt right to add something. I didn't know that you would be doing it separately - so I apologize for my presumption. Of course if you are mentioning it in a separate post then all the more better :-)

2,084!. This is exciting. The rest would be done in less than 5 days. Well done guys. This is really good.
Hahaha YouTube is something else. Even a thumbs down is a dislike? Wow. I wish I can get to see those who click dislike on any channel. Hahahahaha.
This is good. Once the title is about something, we must make sure everything, if not most part of that video stays on course, in line with the title. More like appropriate tagging. That's nice. The rules are not too grievous but for someone who doesn't know this, it might be a struggle, trying to get that visibility.
Thank you for passing your wealth of knowledge to us. This is priceless. I know how much we would have been charged to learn all this if it was a training. Thank you so much.
I look forward to more lessons.
Gracias.

Yeah, we're seeing some huge growth - gaining about 200 subscribers per day now.
It's really important to have your content be relevant to your title, regardless of whether you have a blog or a YouTube channel. If it's irrelevant, people aren't going to read or watch the whole thing, and in the case of YouTube, they're going to de-rank your video because they take your low-adience retention to mean something bad.

That is absolutely right. Ofcourse it shows that it is bad for them, so they have no choice than to rate it lower. Quality over every thing. Thanks for this guidance. This is really helpful I must admit.

Honestly in the past few months, my views , comments, likes are nothing to write home about on my YouTube channel. I put so great efforts in making those videos but in 2months , I have only one view on YouTube videos

But I personally is grateful to this tutorial cause I can say I need it most . More grease to your elbow.

Very nice article! Do you think the same principals can apply on D.Tube? Do you think the Steemit users will choose to bring their original content to D.Tube rather than YouTube in the future? And, good luck on your goal of 2.5K subscribers on YouTube! I'm sure you'll be able to activate them for your D.Tube channel!

Asking people to like your video and having "like" animations would certainly help. However, I don't think DTube has any fancy algorithms determining how content is ranked/suggested on its sight. If could help in the future when DTube gets huge and they actually have the money and manpower to implement such things, but for now, I doubt it.

Either likes or unlikes, its all accepted on YouTube
But why would I even post what people don't like ,since I need more subscribers and more viewers I won't need to upload what they won't like
But I still think thumb down is useful, cos when viewers 👍 👇 down, it would make me put more efforts to my videos cos once they thumb down which means they didnt like the content, they may not back again to watch next one and technically I loose them already
Thanks @tangerintravels and thanks to our @communitycoin

I've personally seen that some of the fastest-growing YouTube channels are those who have videos that get a lot of thumbs down. They put out a lot of controversial stuff and people either love them or hate them for it. Their videos get shared by people who dislike them and by viewers who like them, which has the effect of growing their YouTube channel.

So it doesn't matter if they use thumb down. Thanks much for this reply But what ever viewers do either thumb Up or down, I will still upload the best

If your videos get only thumbs down, that's probably going to be bad for you because, if I had to guess, YouTube will view that as poor content or clickbait. However, if your video is getting a good combination of thumbs up and thumbs down, YouTube may view that as a video that's likely to get shared and rank your video higher.
