the ultimate goal of developing good reading habits is to beable to increse one's reading speed wih in itself is aimed at faster comprehension. Some of the steps to take to achieve this goal are discussed below:
INCREASING RECOGNITION SPAN
Recognition spn otherwise know as fixation is the amount of matrials or words the eyes can take in at one glance. This occurs when the eyes move along the lines f print in an intermittent motion that consists of a series f brief jerks and stops. It is during this fixation that reading occurs.
The number of fixation a reader makes per line depends on the length of the line of print as well as the amount of words his eyes take in at a glance. It is the amount of words a reader can take that determines the type of reader he/she is. Improving reading habits means improving on your fixation ability while reading.
A bad readercan become a good oneby improving his recognition span. This is done first by developing good rhythmic eye movement which takes the eyes from middle of one phrase to the middle of the next one.
AVOIDANCE OF REGRESSION
Regression simply means going back to the portion of a passage one has already read. A poor reader who wishes to improve on his reading sped and consequently his comprehension must learn to ever move forward in his reading.
AVOIDANCE OF HEAD MOVEMENT AND POINTING TO WORDS
Head Movement refers t the shaking or swaying of the head when reading. It is equally not a good practice pointing to words of the printed material being read.
This is because the two acts constitute disturbance which inhibits not only the sped at which one reads but also the comprehension
VOCALIZATION AND OTHER FACTORS
Several other reading habits which make concentration on reading slow and laborious will have o e dropped if a reader wants to improve his reading speed. Such factors include vocalization which is the habit of pronouncing the words of the article being read to oneself.
