They could, but being the libertarians they are, they defend his ownership rights for stolen property.
They cite either the white or blue paper as the old or new testimony, but obviously people, including some witnesses shit on the "thy shalt not buy a vote" and "thy shalt not sell a vote".
These are not the only constituents of the blue/white paper that were violated, but the right to own stolen property is the holiest of all.
