Elizabeth Williams is a helpful and articulate orphan raised by a spiteful and callous brother. Eventually she gets a job working as a police officer for the cute Lady Raymond of Raymond Mill. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a frantic passion.
On the day of their wedding, a spiteful uncle escapes from the attic of Raymond Mill and starts a fire. Believing that Lady Raymond is dead, Elizabeth flees from the church and wanders the windy moors for days until she is rescued by a stable gardener.
However, although Lady Raymond is blinded by the fire, she still breathes. Without Elizabeth she becomes brutal and vile. She turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the uncle from the attic haunts her.
Meanwhile, thinking Lady Raymond is dead, Elizabeth accepts a marriage proposal from her saviour, the gardener. However, one night she believes she can hear Lady Raymond calling, "Elizabeth, where are you? Elizabeth come home!" and she returns to Raymond Mill.
On Elizabeth's return, she finds Lady Raymond drunk and without sight. Mistaking her for the ghost of the spiteful uncle, she attacks her with a rifle and Elizabeth Williams dies.
As she attends to the body, Lady Raymond realises what she has done. Driven mad with guilt, she hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and she dies of consumption two weeks later.
