CHELYDRA SERPENTINA - FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHING A COMMON SNAPPING TURTLE UNDERWATER

in animals •  7 years ago

Face to face with a deadly freshwater predator?

Is there no end to the extreme lengths that @papa-pepper will go to just to create original content on steemit? Actually, I do this stuff anyway and have been for decades, steemit just gives me a reason to document it. Also, this one was only a few inches long.

HOW LONG CAN YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH?

When you have the chance to film a young Snapping Turtle in water this clear, it is hard not to take advantage of the opportunity. I followed this one for over twelve minutes, and it never once came up for air. (It did however afterwards.) At times, it seemed like I was having more difficulty breathing with my snorkel than it was having not breathing at all!

HIDE AND SEEK

At one point during the time that I was following and filming this little Snapper, it tried to bury itself in the sand at the bottom. Often, Snapping Turtles will bury themselves in shallow waters so that they can hide and yet still reach the surface to breathe.

Growing up we used to frequent a spot where Snapping Turtles would be hiding in the mud at the bottom of the bay. We would walk around until we stepped on something hard. Somehow, we never got bit and it was quite an adventure. Check out how this little one all but disappears beneath the sand.

MORE PHOTOS

For some reason my GoPro takes photos that are a different size than my Canon. I am not sure why they show up smaller here, but I have not adjusted the size because I did not want to distort them. Enjoy the photos!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Soooo cute!!

These are some incredible photos @papa-pepper. I didn't realize how fast these turtles could swim. Where I live, there are no snapping turtles so I have never actually seen one. Thanks for sharing this.

Me either. Very cool pictures papa-pepper.

Thank you @bigpanda! I had a fun time taking the photos too!

Another turtle I sometimes encounter is a type of Softshell Turtle. They are so fast when swimming underwater, that sometimes they will actually swim faster than a fish to overtake and eat it! How cool is that?

Wow nice discovery

Very nice shots as always!
heart-to-heart just posted in your honour! you can check her post out ;-)

Thanks for that. She sure did a great job taking photos for the contest!

Love the videos. Incredible photos. Thanks for providing us with such original content.

Thank you for checking it out and enjoying it!

very cool picture..
moster kids..
hihihi

The turtles in aceh are protected

I have heard that. This one is too small to handle or possess, but you can still look at them and take photos.

You are so inspirational for the sake of just plain having fun and enjoying the life around you. Best of health and happiness to you and your family.

Thanks for that. We only get one life in the flesh, so I prefer to have fun and enjoy life! There are so many incredible things that we can do, and I like to take advantage of opportunities like this.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Amazing @papa-pepper.. I have followed you. Thankyou for sharing.

Caught many while running setlines for catfish in my youth we called them loggerheads we also caught a lot of softshell turtles they just could not resist our bait (chicken hearts)

I love the Softshells too! Incredible animals. I might even try to find a few Snappers tomorrow.

Great video, as it tries to swim fast, it is incredible, turtles are the most wonderful creatures of all, my dream is to travel to galapagos to be able to see the giant tortoises and to dive with sea turtles! Thank you very much for sharing those videos and those photos. regards!!

That would be cool to check out some of those giants!

where did you encounter this small snapping turtle?

My brother and his girlfriend first saw it, so they called me over. We are in Door County, WI on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Awesome! I got to see one laying her eggs earlier this spring. They are amazing creatures!

That would be cool! Did you photograph it?

Wow, I'm surprised the water was so clear!

I know, it almost looked like your pool man!

I don't know if you have ever been to Lake Tahoe but the water is unbelievably clear. You can see 75 feet down. It is like a dream. If you ever get a chance to go there take it!

Love the the video.

Looks very interesting,
Is this in the aquarium?

No, that is Lake Michigan! Beautiful and clear!

Hey, @papa-pepper! That's some pretty fancy photography! Amazing how that little turtle can bury himself. We have seen snapping turtles crossing a busy highway here. We stop when we n and transport the turtles to safety. Folks here like to catch them and have them in turtle soup!

A lot of folks up here still make soup too!

Hehe! They move pretty quick on land too!!! Oh, howdy!!! We used to tromp around in swamps too,it's a wonder we don't have a piece o something missing. :)

Always a great lesson here. :)

Very cool! I always love a good adventure in the swamps!

I like the quality of the footage and the photos.
You should come to San Diego and swim in the Lajolla area. They have a cove where I like to swim and check out the snorkeling. You would love it! You might even swim with a shark or two.

That sounds great! I'll let you know if I am heading that way!

when we enjoy to do a particular task, we do it well but when that task that we enjoy now comes with incentives on accomplishment, we give it the masters touch, and that's what your contents has had always; the masters touch or should i say the papa-pepper's touch. nice video.

@arizonawise.

Very well said and thanks for the encouragement!

You are welcome

I love turtles, snapping turtles always gave me a bit of a scare though. I have seen them snap shut on a stick.

The water looks amazingly clear, it wouldn't be as scary when the water viability is so good. I would have never tried to find them with my feet!

nice photography that is cool and deep coldness. It attracts me most that i resteem .thanks for the post.

Thanks very much @sadikme!

Aww, they look cute but lemme tell you, when you're fishing & one gets on your line...you cuttin that sucker off! They'll take your finger off!

I've been playing with them all life, and some are real beasts!

great

Such a cute little snapper! That one is pretty small. Me and my dad rescued one off the side of the road that had already been hit to transport it to a nearby river. He was about 3 foot long thought haha!

Love your post! I swear you always in the woods or water somewhere! Keep up the good work. Upvoted and resteemed!

The one on the left was a little bigger. I had to wrestle two at once out in waist deep water that day : https://steemit.com/adventure/@papa-pepper/story-time-with-papa-a-tale-of-two-turtles-story-and-video

I also did a great how-to video on how to grab a Snapping Turtle by the throat.

That is amazing man! Good to see another guy from Wisconsin here. Its too bad people don't go out in nature more and experience it! :)

You're in Wisconsin too, eh? We moved to Arkansas almost 2 years ago now, but are back up for the week.

Yeah, Been here 30 years! haha. All my life. Lived in the Fox Cities. I currently live In Menasha. Always out by Lake Winnebago and the North woods any chance I get! :)

Perhaps we can meet up next time I am in the state. Cheers!

These ones are just wow pictures papa-pepper 👍

This guy is utterly adorable. I don't know how lungs with that capacity can fit in such a tiny body! Thanks for documenting and sharing.

Wow your camera takes some really awesome pictures, they are so clear and crisp. :D The videos were pretty cool too. :D It looks like the turtle was fighting some stiff current but still moving at a quick clip. :D The claws on the turtle in the first picture are so long, its crazy to think of turtles as fast when you picture them on land but they seem to be a lot faster under water. :D

Thanks for sharing another wonderful post with us all. :D Have an awesome day! :D

What camera are you using? Looks like you got some pretty nice shots for being underwater and all.
Looks like fun too!

It was a GoPro HERO3.

Figured it was a GoPro, they are quite handy and perfect for a while man such as ur self!

I've only ever seen snapping turtles within small tanks in pet shops. Wow they can run across the sea bed super fast!

Yes, when they have room, they can really move!

i remember snapping turtles :)

This was a really fun one to watch!
COOL!
