Turning Trash into Treasure

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

It's not very often people bring me an item that they found in the woods, on a new property that they bought and ask me if there is any way to save it. Normally, everyone wants something new, cheaper and made of some updated material. Every once in a while I get a customer that understands the nature and value of restoring an item and making it your own.

What is it you ask? A property sign, that my dental hygienist found on her farm in the middle of the woods on the former property lines from when the last owners shared the land in different plots. Her husband and her purchased a few properties together to turn them into one big farm. She was very lucky to have found this item as she was placing markers for the bulldozer crew to clear some more lot out.

What she came across was an old hand carved sign. As she knew about my job and hobbies through dental work conversations she knew I could help her turn this found piece of what most would consider trash into a new property marker for her farm.

This is how the sign arrived to me

There was a ton of work to be done. Here is the first step in my restoration process.

There was a lot of micro damage as you can see here. Sanding and filling took roughly a full days work

Now that the sanding nightmare was out of the way base painting could proceed to take place

This is a 2 sided sign so, I had to flip and repeat.

I really like doing these types of projects so here is progress after day one on side one

Here we skip ahead a little as I was fully focused on this and was not thinking about taking pictures too much

At this point the customer was over joyed, I asked her to give me 3 more days to add my personal touch to it.

She agreed

This job was a lot of fun and paid well but I was still able to refurbish it cheaper than I could have made it for her new. She loved the fact that the original was still there under the new

Thanks for checking out my blog and I hope you enjoyed watching my hobby come to life

Wowww! You did a fabulous job! Such a neat and satisfying hobby to give found objects a second life👌

Much better than just making a new one and slapping a price tag on it.

Yeah! And it’s got a cool back story to it!

Woah actually pretty amazing, who knew you had this in you!

There was a lady and man once who took care of me when I was small, they said they knew I'd do great things. I'm not sure if this is what they had in mind.....

Wonderful job :*

Thank you! I will post more since people like this stuff.

That turned out terrific! Nice restoration!

Thank you my friend, it was a good experience as well to let the kids watch.

Indeed. Very wabi-sabi of you. It'll be cool to see what your little helpers can do when they're able to help dad with some projects like that.

Looks great you did a great job restoring it.

Thank you, you know where I am if you find any treasure on the new property.

Awesome work. I always enjoy seeing good restoration works.
It is indeed an amazing art.
Have you ever worked on old buildings restorations?

This little thing is a daily work in progress

Cool man!
I am a civil engineer, and building restorations always fascinated me. Too bad i never got the opportunity to work with It.
I would like to hear more about this work.

The house has more 93° angles and 86° slopes floors than anywhere I have ever lived. 10 x 8 Cedar beams everywhere, so it is solid.

Great work. Loving the restore job. You are very good at this and you know it!

Thank you, Julie. That was kind.

There's a lot of value in restoring something. I especially like woodworks and musical instruments. That blue looks bright as f**k.

Thanks, I was very happy with the water since the letters are done in Goldleaf. Usually those letters would have taken over the entire sign in brightness.

Wow eroded good job! :)

Thank you, it's always more fun when someone else kind of tells you what they want. I do that then add my own fun to it.

I really like this. You are damn creative.

Thanks, I find these types of things fun. I'd probably have done it for free if she would have let me.

veeeeeeeeeery nice!!! i'm impressed!

Hot damn, I paid out prizes and forgot to announce the winners. Yes, you won, one of 8 secret prizes. Your prize was for using actual shit in your art. Who will find the next mystery item?

Behwhahahahahaahahahahahaa classic man .. Appreciate that brother, I'll have to use tons more eh ... Winner announcement mate always do those they pay better than the actual contest, well they do mostly my side anyways.. hehe.. Cheer$;)

It's a flop, lol

We learn as we go eh ;)
