BRAAING - DO YOU COOK AND EAT? - (Featuring author @dragonslayer109)

Braai, A cultural tradition in South Africa that all must be able to do. If you can't then you not a true South African.

As the oldest man in my family, at the moment, it becomes my duty to make the fire and braai the meat as the women cook the rest... Sounds pretty easy for men right. Try light a fire with no matches or fire lighters... lucky for me I learnt these 2 skills at a young age... after the long struggle, red face and empty lungs. I finally got it up and going.

My mother being really impressed handed me the meat and so my job began... visitors came over to check what I was busy with.

The joys of having a sister with some bread.

I prefer to cook the meat in the packet first. Not as easy as it sounds as one can melt the plastic onto the meat. This process allows the mean to absorb most of the marinade and seasoning.

Once that is done the braaing starts. You know your fire is ready when placing your hand near it, your hair on your hand starts to singe.

The classical braai always calls for mielie pap(porridge made from maize) this always goes with the tomato source made and roasted vegetables.

Tooth picks are always mandatory

Hi @dragonslayer109

Looks good, but why would you light the fire without matches and firelighters?

Perhaps you must post the steps to do this!

In my house the bigger boys do the braai and the parents drink a few beers, you should try it my way.

I am the bigger boy in this case as I am not married. I am also the cook of the house :D

Awesome!!!! You are free!!

It looks: hmmm yummy! I would like a plate like that.

sorry all finished and yes it was really yummy

Wow I never heard of this before. So the intense heat keeps the inside of the meat juicy still?

well I wouldnt suggest you try this at home and if you haven't done it before best not to do it :) at all

I would need the matches (okay firestarter also) but looks delicious!

Looks great, but....what about the potentially melting plastics...? Yuck!

hahaha you dont melt it onto the meat lol

Never had the chance to visit South-Africa, but heard many good things about braai. S-Africa and braaiaAdded to the to-do(eat) list.

well that is definitely and amazing to-do list now

heheh... @dragonslayer109 got some skills in cooking with the packet. I sense he's a risk taker. :-)

I have got skills so not much of a risk although the first time i almost made a mistake
