Why Facebook and Youtube are losing users to Steemit: My interview with Bloomberg

in bloomberg •  7 years ago  (edited)

I was interviewed by Bloomberg for this article on decentralized social media platforms and crypto fundraising. I chatted a lot about our TV series @hardfork-series and our fundraising through Steemit it but unfortunately a lot was cut out. Super thrilled to give Steemit some publicity though :)

The flip side, of course, is that such lax rules can make these sites havens for precisely the kinds of hate speech, conspiracy theories, and otherwise undesirable material that YouTube and others are slowly taking action to block.

Like conspiracy theories that YouTube was blocking makers who create conspiracy theories of YouTube censoring videos.

so meta

Even though Steemit doesn't censor I see very little hate speech and much more civilised behaviour than on Facebook. If we want to live in freedom we have to accept that some will abuse it - but the alternative is tyranny for everyone.

The business model steem and dtube have cannot be sustained. The crypto value is perceived. They need to have a meaningful business model . The network effect is huge and the steemit adoption and layout is like the early social networks. I think the space will have a winner but that company is yet to be formed

I believe the business model built on the steem blockchain is unprecedented. Prior to the blockchain, tokenized incentivization is impossible. So its hard to say if its sustainable or otherwise.

Also you should know that STEEM as the blockchain is totally different from the websites built on the blockchain.

Not gonna talk about the perception of of coin value because that will never end.

Overall I'm super positive about Steem as the cryptocurrency and can't be bothered which startup will rise as the top steem-based social network.

The crypto value is perceived.

The same can be said of the U.S. Dollar.

No US Dollar or most fiat currencies are backed by a government and is correlated to economic output of a country ,miltery power which indirectly influence the economic clout and so on. True decentralization means border less countries and territories .Hard to imagine now but may be several decades from now. I believe the crypto economic model will change

Exactly! In fact, isn't the value of everything perceived? To a dehydrated man in the desert a glass of water holds much more value than all the gold in Ft. Knox.......

Exactamundo.. By now it should be common knowledge to all cryptocurrency users/holders/traders that all values are based on perception - Bitcoin, beanie bears, the dollar, company stocks et al... The more people understand that, the easier things will be.

"On most cryptocurrency exchange sites, you have to trade them for Bitcoin first, then swap the Bitcoin for cash"

You know, I'm so super excited when people point that out. Because it literally is a network effect problem. All it takes really one person starting to accept Steem for cash and it's going to snowball from there.

In fact I've ever thought "why stop there?". Steem Dollar (with big enough volume imo) functions perfectly as a medium of Exchange, if not Steem itself. Why not straight up sell coffee for Steem?

It's something that's been done in Malaysia where I'm from for example. We're still a small community but it's enough that one of us (@danielwong) literally start integrating cryptocurrency in his business and accept Steem for his Lit-AF burgers.

Even @sjnennon approves of how good it is!!

IMO i feel Big Webs like Facebook and Alphabet have 2 options. Adapt to crypto (good luck with that ) or get replaced. Thinking of that, if there were such a thing as a crypto boner, i'd have one now. LOL

Thanks for reading the article!!

Was my pleasure!!

You are exactly right! The more users Steemit attracts, the more opportunity for users to interact using Steem as a currency. Steem for a burger sounds pretty good to me!

Burger is the very very beginning. Bitcoin may have its Pizza Day, Steem will soon have a "All Utility Day". Lol

Sounds like a plan :)

me too!

Facebook & Google are very threatened by Web 3.0 competitors they can't buy who offer a better deal to consumers (ie let users own, control & monetise their own data).

Facebook & Google's entire business model is to monetise its users' data.
They are sucking us dry just like in The Matrix.

Yeah they're definitely threatened. Facebook is already hiring more blockchain developers, they'll be releasing something soon I'm sure

Hi Naomi, I wondered whether you'd like to do an interview with me regarding the class action we're running against Facebook and Google for the Crypto Ad Ban. www.jpbliberty.com. You can contact me at [email protected]

Highly rEsteemed!

steemit is a platform with an amazing growth project, it's like it has no limits, there are for everyone and everything, plus every day grows in quality, this makes us all spend more time here without thinking about another social network, I love steemit for being authentic and because I can spend hours without getting bored, like I am meeting many people, thank you for talking about steemit, greetings.

completely agree! I love it so much :)

This is really good exposure for Steem, I hope we see more of it.

Super happy to give Steemit exposure, it's the best! I also chatted about it in my recent podcast with tradercobb. Steem ftw :)

Because all the social networks think only about their own livelihood, and do not think we've reached 2018 and it's time to start developing into STEEM Style.

exactly, steem is the future :)

It is an early sign for all other institutions resisting blockchain, be it banking, state registries, trade systems.... everything that resists will die a painful death!

You may well be right!!
