Moving to a New Part of Town - Changing Coffee Shops Has Me Nervous

The coffee shop, to me, is like an office. I do the vast majority of my professional writing (including Steemit) in coffee shops, and right now there’s just one shop within walking distance of my apartment.

Caribou Coffee.

It’s a good spot with a lot of different seating - hard backed chairs at two person tables, long conference table style ones, booths, ultra comfy lounge chairs by a heater… The variety is great because different kinds of days call for different postures.

The coffee is cheap and the refills are free. After my three months of patronage here, I know a lot of the baristas by name. It is a chill hang.

However, I am just about to move to a new house in a new area of town. I’ll be downtown from now on.

Moving Coffee Shops Ain’t Easy…

…but it is inevitable sometimes. This location of Caribou Coffee won’t be particularly easy or logical to get to from my new home. I’m sure I will still come in from time to time, but it won’t be my daily spot.

One of my last cups from Caribou for now…

Thus I have to find a new spot that works for me. This is a big deal. The coffee shop is the office, it’s the work environment, it is a very delicate balance that must be struck so I can write thousands of words every day like I do.

Some coffee shops are too small, they barely have any seating. You can’t monopolize the table for a 4+ hour writing session in a spot like that.

Other shops are too sterile or lame, like I’d prefer to avoid using Starbucks as my go-to spot because it feels too corporate. Even Caribou has its issues in this area, they played Xmas music for 1.5 months straight (total corporate move), ergh.

Not Sure What Options I Will Have

Until I actually move and spend a few days at my new home, I won’t know what coffee shops are in that area. I haven’t done a lot of research since this move is casual - no lease at my old spot, no lease at the new one - and I’d rather just learn as I go.

I know we will be close to downtown so there will probably be several coffee shops to choose from. If one of them is medium sized and has some good coffee + wifi, it will be fine.

Maybe I’ll end up at a coffeeshop that I enjoy even more than my current spot. That is not necessary at all, but it would be pretty cool. I could also experiment with more night time writing if I find a quiet bar that has some good wifi lol.

What about you? How do you pick your coffeeshop?

I know what you mean. I moved more out of town and travel 15 minutes more out of my way to get my favorite fix in the morning ☺️

That is a long time to travel for a cup of coffee... must be a good one!

Take care of your heart @heymattsokol! Too much coffee and free refills sounds nice at first, but seems like it may carry heavy implications later.

From what I hear, coffee isn't too bad for you. Could be wrong tho

Actually, the experts have changed their mind on coffee and no longer blame it for heart problems. They even say it's good for you. In fact, I should be drinking more coffee right now!

I love the coffee shop as office, though most of the time where we are is pretty rural so I just work in my own little studio/office. In the summer I go out to our local a bit more, but too cold now and you have to drive there. When I am in London one of my favourite is the Cafe nero off Piccadilly that is connected to the St. James Cathedral near St. James Square. It is my favorite work cafe when I am in the city. Good luck at your new locale!

It is so cold this winter!! Thank you for the recommendation, I will check it out one day when I visit London.

That's rough! I've actually never been to a coffee shop that had free refills... But usually, I look for a shop that is kind of tucked away and isn't in the middle of a shopping center. I like it to be like an escape. Best wishes though!

Free refills is amazing! I think some of the major chains like Starbucks offer it, but you're right that it is rare at smaller coffeeshops. Those boutique brews are too valuable

Personal recommendations from other locals are always the best way to find a new coffee shop. In a good downtown, you'll run into them by accident if you spend any time walking around.

But TripAdvisor isn't just for tourists. 🤐

I've already found two cool coffeeshops within 24 hours of moving to my new spot! I think it's all gonna work out.

Their logo sucks. Just sayin'.

Yea its not the most inspired artwork

No you just really hate Christmas songs!!!
