Dave Chappelle: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize on Netflix

in comedy •  4 years ago

This already aired on public television (PBS) quite some time ago but for many of us that don't have regular television and rely on Netflix for just about everything (that's me) this was the first time that we were able to see the award presentation ceremony honoring Dave Chappelle for this prestigious award.

The entire presentation is condensed for the viewing audience and is comprised of a bunch of Dave's friends honoring him. This includes TV stars, childhood friends that became writers for Chappelle Show and just some famous people that Dave admires and likes such as Morgan Freeman as well as people you forgot about like Chris Tucker.

This special is nice for some reasons and a bit not-so-nice for others. For one thing, not all of Dave's pals are as funny as Dave is... actually none of them are. Some of them come close like Jon Stewart and others fall completely flat such as Sarah Silverman.

Unfortunately, mixed in with the reason why the event was held in the first place... to honor Dave for being the exemplary comedian that he most certainly is, as a mish-mash of people using this televised event to promote a political message and I don't think I am alone when I say that I am dead tired of politics infiltrating anything and everything that we watch.

It seems as though every 3rd person that got up on stage took about 1/3 of the time promoting themselves, 1/3 of the time giving their political opinion to an audience that obviously already agrees with them or at least is pretending they do, and 1/3 of the time honoring Dave.

I appreciated the fact that Dave didn't react to any of the political speeches that anyone gave. I wonder how he really feels about all that seeing as how he is one of the people who has, for the most part, stayed out of having a public political preference.

It should come as no surprise that the best part of the entire thing is where Dave makes his 5 minutes speech at the end and it was a fitting way to finish the otherwise kind of "just ok" event from an entertainment perspective.

I would say that you should watch this if you like Dave, but probably with your remote in hand to skip all of the eye-rolling, self-serving presentations that come along the way.
