The Nth Society game that I'm putting forward now is a play-by-post RPG which will be played right here on Steem. It is a storytelling game in which players write what characters' action is, as a protagonist attempts to achieve their goal, helped and hindered by those around them. The game has the overall theme of exploring voluntaryism.
Read my last post get to an idea of some character relationships and some further reading links.
I am putting the final touches on the first version of the rules, but before that we know that we'll need a main protagonist character. They are the center of the story, the person with the highest stakes in the narrative, and who the story is mainly "about".
We'll need:
- Name and particulars
- Background
- Goals
Perhaps the most important thing here is the goal. What should they try to achieve? Maybe starting their own business, farm or homestead? Maybe running for local election on a minarchist platform? Maybe leaving the police force as they discover the effect of their actions? On the flipside, maybe a government agent tasked with finding out about potential "enemies of the state" and infiltrating their community circle? Or more subtle, a suborn conservative / liberal (read: statist) who wants to quash the rising anarchists in their area from any political power?
They don't have to be explicitly "good" or "bad", and in fact the less they are described as such the more verisimilitude the game will have. I say this because I know a lot of the above terms will evoke strong moral images to many people. This is something to be considered, things are not black and white, and so this is one of the reasons the game centers on goals, which for some will be congruous and other be competing.
Those are my off the top of the head ideas. I could write the background and goal myself, and maybe I'll have to, 5 STEEM isn't the attractive reward it once was 😅 but I'd like to throw this out there for ideas. I'm always so interested to hear what other people think and attempt to integrate with your creativity, for me that's a fundamental goal I have.
Competition rules
- Entries are accepted in the form of a comment on this post only, one entry per person, only first entry counts. You can edit up until the closing time.
- The competition closes at 3pm noon EST 11th December 2018, which is 12 noon PST or 8pm UTC / GMT.
- Judges will pick one entry, which will be used in the upcoming first game of Nth Society (subtitle of game to be decided)
- The prize is 5 STEEM, transferred after judges decision.
- Judges decision is final and will be made no longer than 24 hours after competition closes.
I haven't actually got any judges yet, but I'll be asking some people in my "advisory circle" to help me out if they can. Though I won't make those conversations public we will be fair.
Thanks all who enter!
Looking forward to what you write 😁
Going to give this a shot with a character that, like most of society, knows absolutely nothing about voluntaryism (including how to spell it). I'll probably edit this over time.
Name: Hendrick Fisher, 35 male, lives in various places (homeless but calls himself a "voyager") in a truck with a camper top attached, has family that he never speaks to, owns a small dog named "Gmac". Tows a trailer for scrap collection, expert at metal processing. Upset that he's a millennial. Thinks Jesus is a scam.
Background: Failed at holding down good jobs since getting into the workforce as a teenager. Didn't feel like showing up to most of them. Wasn't even drug or mental illness related, just didn't feel like it. Somehow graduated highschool. No longer associates with family. Wasn't really his choice, they just figured it's best to forget he existed. Recently picked up a good working laptop with the scrap, kept it.
Goal: Someone gave him a pamphlet about voluntaryism at a truck stop so he's using his new laptop to further delve into the concept. Feels it's right for him and may be his calling. Considering the fact that he always felt he shouldn't have to do anything he doesn't want to at a given time. Originally thought it was a movement about doing nothing. Now he wants to learn more about it and somehow monetize this knowledge and the process thereof. Particularly since scrap prices suck.

I had a different idea in mind, but this character sounds very flexible and would do nicely. After all, it doesn't really matter who the main character is because humans can behave very differently under various circumstances. It will be the story that builds around the character that will affect HOW the main character will behave. Sounds like a fantastic story is about to unfold.
