Steemit Basic Income Giveaway (Hobbies)

in contest •  6 years ago  (edited)

Thanks to everyone who took part in last week's Idioms SBI Giveaway. It was an interesting array of answers from people around the world and of different languages and countries. There were some really amazing and baffling idioms which would have been confusing to anyone who wasn't a native of the country!

So, I'm writing this post as my brain is completely fried after a non-sleeping night with the toddler... I'm starting to think that removing the bar from her bed wasn't the best idea, but I guess it has to be done at some point before they leave home! Today was also a big day of single parenting (my wife is doing an intensive Dutch course at the moment), so we were out all day at a bird park which was really great, but in the heat it was pretty exhausting.

Coming to the point, it means I can't get my brain firing on all cylinders (or any cylinders) to write a SBI contest about something philosophical or a big question or anything like that! So, this week, I'm going again with a slightly softer question.

It's an easy one, after a day of work (or standing in the Sun with kiddies...), we all need a way to blow of steam and just do something to relax. Even if we are completely brain dead tired, or especially if we are brain dead tired. So, my question this week is:

### What is your hobby? The thing that you turn to help re-centre yourself, that you love doing, that helps you relax again? And just share a little bit about what it is that makes it so enjoyable for you!

Now, hopefully I don't get a million and one replies of "writing posts on Steemit"...

My example Response

Unsplash

I'm a gamer through and through. Since I was little, I would enjoy computer games and board games, mostly with a preference for deep strategy and complex mechanics. I would lose myself in worlds that were immersive and that had non-linear and player-generated stories instead of a directed narrative. I would play myself in multiplayer board games (like Axis and Allies or BattleTech), I would get completely smitten with the huge year long game span of PC games like XCom, Crusader Kings 2 or Master of Orion. I would never want the game to finish, as the act of finishing meant that the simulation was over.

As I am now a parent, I now have much much less time to spend on my hobby, but it is lucky for me that the games that I prefer can be pretty much started and stopped at short notice with save games, and so I can play in short bursts... or if I'm on tour, long bursts!

Weirdly enough, it is still a hobby that is seen as a kid's hobby, and if you are judging by the standards of the console games that are around, then they can be really seen as an idle distraction. However, the depth that can be built into a complex PC game is often incredibly ambitions, being complex simulations that don't hesitate to throw you difficult situations (like real life), difficult choices and fail states.

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, tell me about your hobby and why it engages you!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a beginning author, Steemit can be a daunting place. It feels like you are posting into an abyss with no ability to grow. Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but cumulative over time support to your account.

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people).

Last week's winners

Last week paid out 0.365 SBD and 0.442 STEEM, so I will make it 2 shares.

Congratulations to:

I have a long list of hobbies, too many if you ask my wife. The ones I always come back to are fishing and woodworking. I've been keeping bees for about five years now, so that is probably my primary hobby. I also like to roast coffee.

The winners of this SBI contest and the new question (Rules/Laws) is here:

https://steemit.com/newbiegames/@bengy/steemitbasicincomegiveawayrulesandlaws-cc8e7sfy9u

Wow that is an incredibly interesting group of hobbies! Bee-keeping is pretty unusual, how many hives do you have and how is the honey harvest?

This post is about my recent honey harvest.

I have seven hives this year. Some years I catch a bunch of swarms and end up with lots of hives. This year I lost two but I caught two swarms and broke even.

I tried to catch a swarm in Mexico but it wasn't as docile as the books claim them to be.
Ending up getting stung on the forehead.

Humans write a lot of books about bees, but bees never read them.

LOL! This is the funniest thing I've read today!

Excuse me for my lack of originality, but if I´m going to be sincere, I have to say my hobby is also gaming.

I play computer games since I was 10 years old. I used to play board games too but since my friends disliked games with complex rules, I´ve experienced only the most basic roleplaying tabletops. I would have loved to play battletech, but sadly haven´t. Then I turned to single player games because I don´t need to organize a gathering to play them.

Amongst the games I love the most, are RPGs/Isolinear turn based shooters with some uniqueness to their story. Loved the X-com series, the old one and the new one as well. Unsurprisingly I loved the Baldur´s Gate series as well as the Fallout series, which I´ve been playing from Fallout 1
to the 4th installment.

But I also love strategy games with complex economics. I´m dead serious when I tell you that those games taught me how to manage a budget, and I´m better at it than most of my friends(both strategy, and managing budgets).

Nowadays, I have very little spare time, so I play Warthunder almost exclusively. It is the best tank/plane/ship action game out there and it even has three playing modes: arcade, realistic and simulator battles. It has literally hundreds of vehicles from WW2 of the five main nations, and even some cold war vehicles. They have a unique damage system where each shell trajectory, composition and penetration angle is simulated against the tank/plane/ship armor and internals, resulting in a realistic damage sim. Combined battles are also unique to this game: you can be in a tank, battling all other players who are tanks, and get attacked by planes who are also controlled by players. Resulting in a dynamic battle environment. Also, even though it´s freemium, it´s not pay to win since a good pilot/tanker/captain can kill any premium enemy easily.

If this seems like a shameless publicity, it is because I enjoy this game very much(I´m level 100 there and have played it for more than 2 years) and I am indeed shamelessly taking this opportunity to put my referral link out there(which will give you a small benefit to both you and me in the game premium currency)

http://warthunder.com/en/registration?r=userinvite_10944782

It seems like we have the same tastes in games! Although, I'm not so much of a fan of multiplayer online games. I did play alot of Counterstrike and Team Fortress 2 when I sas younger, but these days I crave something that might finish!

For a longer single player game, you should try Stellaris. If you like the Masters of Orion series, you will LOVE this. You should get the latest expansion, its actually pretty cheap. What is unique about this game? Well, each type of race is played differently and each has its own storyline with a unique endgame crisis and ending. The game also throws plenty of surprises at you at hard difficulty - one minute you might think you´re winning and another minute a whole extra dimensional armada pours down on your doorstep with thousands more ship than you, and even if all the races of the quadrant unite it will be troublesome to fight them(I´m not kidding). It´s slow paced enough that feels like Civilization but its very politically oriented as well. Instead of just conquering empires, you can make them fear you enough so that they split in multiple factions, and one splinter group may become loyalist to you. And a big etcetera... try it if you can, it´s the best long space strategy game I´ve played so far.
On the other hand, if you want a strategy game that you can finish each new game in an hour or two, try Sins of a Solar Empire.
And never forget Sword of the Stars 2... that has the most detailed combat simulation in any strategy space game. Feels like civ, but you can actually play the battles and control the ships.

I've got Stellaris on my backlog, I was waiting until they had ironed out the usual Paradox launch 'features'!

In the mean time I had being playing endless Legend 2 and Endless Space as well. I definitely recommend those!

I have not v played Sins for quite some time. It was pretty cool, but I just lost interest, it really seemed more suited to a multiplayer sort of game.

SOTS was another that I was waiting for launch issues to be sorted. Again another game hanging around in my backlog!

.. But thanks for reminding me of these gems!

Both Stellaris and Sots 2 are pretty polished right now... I got the latest version and I can´t seem to find any bugs(they were loaded with them when they were first released).
Btw, Endless space 2 rocks... that´s the one that feels most like Civ in space(Exceptuating Alpha Centauri, which is exactly Civilization in space).

It will probably not be a real surprise, but my favorite way to clear my head and relax is by gardening. My garden is my stress-free zone.
When I'm taking care of my veggies, everything seems to fall into place; all my worries disappear, and the constant stream of thoughts going through my head finally stops. It's just me and the garden, and nothing else seems to matter :0)

I've found gardening to be also a great stress reliever... there is something just quite calming and I just lose track of time, whether I'm tying up stuff, or pruning or just getting weeds out...

Which reminds me, I'm supposed to mow the lawn today....

Sorry for reminding you of that, lol. Mowing the lawn is propably the least fun task when it comes to gardening :0D

LOL, I promptly forgot again! Tomorrow's job!

I don't know about the weather condition over there, but I'm guessing they won't be so different from those here. Are you sure it would be a good idea to mow the lawn on a day with temperatures of 35°C and above, lol?

Oh, but you're Australian, right? You are probably more used to this weather than we are 😎

I've lost my hot weather sense... I almost melted today, so maybe it is a job for next week!

Lol.
I was talking to @lynncoyle1 earlier. They're trying to survive temperatures in the mid 40s in Mexico,
I always thought that if you were born and raised in a country where high temperatures were normal, you would be able to handle them better. Guess I was wrong, haha.

It surprises me you still have any grass left. Because of the ongoing drought, ours is just brown and refuses to grow - except for some weeds that doesn't seem to care whether it is dry or not :0)

It's still crazy hot, but like I said to you before, the locals are wearing their skinny jeans and tight shirts, so they must get used to it. We even saw a girl in ankle boots the other day!

Me? not so much. It's a pretty picture when you're sweating just sitting :)

Our garden is pretty small and a little sheltered from the sun. We don't get it full on all day. So when we water the garden plants, the grass gets enough water.

However, as you can see from the photo, the outside common area is brown...

My hobby is mainly reading. I read a lot of motivational and Relationship books. It helps calm my nerves and takes my mind off the happenings from around me. It's also one good means through which I put myself to sleep. Most times when I'm finding it difficult to have a nap, I just pick up something to read. After a little while I'll feel relax and start dozing off.

Reading is a great relaxing hobby! I used to do that all the time... sadly, much less often these days.

Reading helps the mind relax: mostly when you're reading funny and interesting stuffs. It seems your day is always very busy.

Hiking - although I don't do it nearly enough.

Its amazing to go on vacation and hike 12-15 miles, and at the end of the day feel physically tired but mentally sharp. I feel way better than if I sat in cube nation all day.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

I used to love hiking, but it was more of a thing that needed to be organised rather than something that you just do at the end of the day (well, unless you walked to work...). Do you have a preference for where you would hike? I liked forests, and mountains were okay if it wasn't too hot.... definitely didn't like dunes or near the sea.

Southwestern US - Utah, Arizona, New Mexico is my favorite area so far, but I need to get to the Northwest and Rockies to do mountain hiking! I like pushing myself on hills vs flat stuff.

Whoa! I actually won an SBI share? Awesome! Thank you! :D

As for my hobbies... I'm an adult, and I love gaming too! (despite being visually impaired and needing a sighted person by my side to help me most of the time) I'm in the process of writing a series of posts about the video games that impacted my life (this linked post is a bit old but is the latest one I've written about it and has links to the previous posts in the series. I really need to put the next part together...).

I played many kinds of games, and particularly liked games based on anime and with lots of voice acting (preferably in Japanese), puzzle games (like Bust-a-Move), some platformers (like Kirby and Mega Man). Now I'm leaning towards games that don't require superb reflexes such as turn-based RPGs (like Pokemon and the Persona series. Mostly into Persona right now. Literally bought a PS4 just so I could play Persona 5). I love games with immersive plots and lots of character development. These kind of games give me so much to think about, and the characters really feel alive. I also don't like when the game ends, and the story ends... but that's where fan fictions come in! Additional events, alternative scenarios, other versions of the story with different twists, and whatever else other fans come up with. Possibilities are endless. Reading and writing fan fiction is another hobby of mine, linked to the gaming one.

Since we are at it, another hobby that I've been developing recently is... playing the violin! I don't know why, but already as an adult, I suddenly fell in love with the sound of the violin. I found the sound so beautiful that I decided I'd somehow have to learn to play it! And this was how a 26 to 27 year-old adult visually impaired woman began taking weekend violin lessons three years ago :P . Currently doing fourth position exercises from the Shinozaki Violin Method book volume 3. Not much time to practice, just around one hour maximum in my free time after work (which has nothing to do with music), but I'm advancing at my own pace, and I think it's good enough for me, and for a hobby...

Whoa! let me check... Yes you did!

Haha, anyway, I'm glad you are also a gamer! Although, I see from your post that you are an evil console gamer!!!! BOOOOOO, PC gaming is the TRUE gaming... hehehhe!

I love the persona series, I was really into it with the Nintendo DS and also the PSP. I have a Switch, and so I'm really really hoping they will release something on it...

Funnily enough, I'm a violinist as well!

I'm evil! Mwahahahaha!

Persona series and violin, yesss!

Have you played Persona 5 yet? I played Persona 3 and 4 on PS2, then Persona 5 on PS4. I've started Persona Q on the 3DS but didn't get too far. Now I'm waiting for the Persona rhythm games, and wondering whether it'll be possible to memorize the note charts for each song, kind of like I have to memorize the violin exercises XD .

Not Persona, but it looks like the next SMT ("Shin Megami Tensei," not "Smart Media Tokens!" :P ) will come out for the Switch.

No Switch for me yet, still waiting for the price to lower. Since there's no longer an official distributor for Nintendo products over here in Brazil, all Switches on sale here are imports, and cost around $2,000 BRL (around $500 USD!). Maybe next year...

Wow, that is a touch expensive! It's weird that Brazil doesn't have a distribution channel, I knew that phones were expensive, but Nintendo? They are around 250 euro here.

I haven't had a go yet at Persona 5, is it on switch?

Now that you mention it, I think I was playing smt and not persona. I keep getting the two confused!

Brazil used to have an official distribution channel, but Nintendo left because of the absurdly high taxes (and probably other issues too).

Persona 5 is on PS3 and PS4.

I will describe one I used to do several years ago. I also loved to play some games. But I had in the past a computer called MSX, very popular here in Brazil, and the game genre I liked the most was RPG. There was only one problem: the vast majority of the RPGs games which was being made for MSX was in japanese. So if I tell you that I finished several japanese RPGs games from MSX, with no understanding at all about japanese? I just developed some 6th sense about this, I remember being stuck in a game called Dragons Slayer VI, cause my character wouldnt pass through a doorway, then I thought: what if I unequip all my armours and weapons? I tryed it, and guess what? I did it. On that time, this kind of resolution served me as a kind of hobby.

I had heard of that console, but I never saw one. Funny that you would play Rpgs in a different language! Rpgs are some of the most reading heavy games!

My hobby, photography and dogs ... and best is to combine it together. So being with my dogs, enjoying the love from them, giving love to them, building memories with them, giving them what they all need. Being in the nature with the dogs, doing excercise with the dogs, and looking at those lovely snouts, observing them while they play, while they discover the world, and love them ... and when you do a good job as a boss, you get so much love back, and that's what I try to capture in my photo's. The individual character of every dog. Because they all are really different. It's not just a dog, but a individual being with a beautiful soul. And when you can see that in the picture I have done my job.

Photographing dogs means for me, Enjoying nature and being together and building memories. All at the same time. And yes, that is relaxation.

On the picture, Rowan and Myla

(

Wow, that is one very nice photo! Big dogs you have too, and the shot captures such a nice (morning?) fog as well! As I'm typing this on a hot evening, it really feels like a fresh breeze from the computer!

It's great that you can combine your hobby and your loved pals as well!

This was a very early morning, of a very hot day. But not as hot as it was today. I know that your evening is extremely hot because we are typing in the same country ... Yes the dogs are big, and the third one is not in this photo. And the fourth one has died last month unfortunately. They are my loves, my life and my passion ... and so is photography. Thank you for your kind reply!

My hobbie is sportarbitage ( I think that is right word) and similar things. It is kind of mix of mathematic, logic and earnings. But - my brain maybe not is cooling down this times.

I had to look up what this was! Sounds interesting, but I can see how it gives the brain a bit of a workout!

Yes it is. Most mathematic. A lot of small streams makes a river.
Love to find systems and use them.

My hobby is the reason I am on Steemit. I love to fold origami and I love exploring established models and making something new
pixlr_20180611111034678.jpg

All the models shown can be folded by altering the omega star unit in some small way.

These are great! I'm surprised that are still variations to be discovered in such an ancient art form!

I was surprised too when I first started. I must have searched through 14 pages of origami boats on google images before acknowledging that I might have made something new.

I have a 2.5 year old (almost a Three-nager) - who has time for a hobby these days???

But in all seriousness, I do have a couple of things that I do enjoy to relax a bit.

Firstly, I am a Lego enthusiast. I don't get to build as much or as often as I'd like these days (small hands that want to "help" make it a challenge). Of course Lego can be a bit expensive at times, so I help subsidise my hobby by running a Bricklink store. Bricklink is a giant online Lego marketplace which has "stores" from all over the world that sell Lego parts and sets. I actually plan to start accepting Steem and SBD as payment methods soon, so if that interests anyone, give me a follow - I'll be doing a post on it when I'm ready to go.

The second thing I do to relax (and also earn a little cash on the side) is I drive for Uber. Sure, the money is pretty poor and I wouldn't want to be trying to do it to make a living full time, but I enjoy the interaction with people and I earn enough to let me spend a little extra on my daughter.

I don't know about this Bricklink, I will have to look! My daughter is hugely into Lego and I noticed they have dedicated brick removal tools now! No more skinned fingers and broken finger nails!

Did you build those huge Lego structures that you would see at Lego exhibitions?

Driving for uber? I find city driving not very relaxing, if it was long distance I would like that more!

I wish I was talented enough to build those Mega creations. They are done by people much more talented than I am.

My biggest hobby is the international language Esperanto: I learned it, I have been teaching it for two decades, I use to read books, magazines, listen to music, talk to my friends, and travel to different countries and attend Esperanto conventions like the one taking place in Lisbon over the next week, where I am heading too.

Wow, I've known of Esperanto since I was at university, but it was only recently when I discovered how big it was with conventions and gatherings!

I never tried as I have so much difficulty with languages, on the other hand, a well designed language might be right up my alley. Enjoy Lisbon!

Thank you, @bengy! You can become fluent in Esperanto in just 2–3 months. If you decide to give it a try, check out DuoLingo app for smartphones. It’s the best!

Cheers, friend!

When I'm stressed out and I don´t have time to practice a little bit of Volleyball, I sit up in front of the computer and just watch innumerous funny things, because at the end laughing is good for your health...
I just need a comfortable place in my chair or sofa and then I´m set to start relaxing and preparing myself to another day of hard work.

Wow, you play volleyball? At the beach or on a field?

Definitely, having a good laugh is a great stress relief!

During the year (season) I play indoor, but in the summer there are a lot of tournaments on the beach that I have to be present!! :D

Indeed!! Laugh until crying is just to good, in my opinion :D

You asked the question about what relaxes you and takes you away from the every day slog. I wouldn’t call it a ‘hobby’ of such but I love going down to the pub for a few drinks to either watch and football match or chat with friends . Now I am in the same boat like yourself , I have a toddler so the carefree days of lying on the couch with a hangover are well and truly over. But chatting with friends over a pint or a match really does it for me . Most people feel bad the next day , but I feel refreshed and happy. My wife knows this and never has a problem with me heading down for a pint. She comes with me if we can get a babysitter or she goes for coffee with her friends and I stay home but it’s just that release that gets you away from work /nappies and ironing. Now I’d love to find a release that doesn’t lead to hangover but I just love the smell , the atmosphere , the laughing , arguing , the craic in Irish pubs more than the drinking side of it. When I stopped going out , I struggled to find something to fill the void. I took up cycling and programming but nothing was doing it for me . I know most of you might think , he’s an alchy! 😂😂. But I seriously don’t drink much . Maybe 4-5 pints twice a month. That’s my hobby! Attached is a picture of my local. I normally side at one of them barrels

That's great! It is really important for parents to get away from the kids once in a while! We don't have pub nights, but we get together with other fathers/mothers and dump the kids and go out for a nice meal (and then a little drink at a pub afterwards!)... Or if it just the two of us, we go to a really nice restaurant!

The place looks great, open areas and lots of space! Hope it gets nice and full, with a band somewhere!

my biggest hobby that trumps all others is collecting things! I collect so many little trinkets that I run it of space for them. I collect memorabilia for games/movie franchises that i like, small toy swords, keys, antiques, fossils, mineral rocks, interesting metal samples, and (one of my favorites) animal relics! These include skulls, antlers, horns, hooves, teeth, you name it! These I usually find when I'm following trails in the woods, I am not a hunter.
I have many many more minor collections that I just can't think of right now.
Also, I like playing RPGs that let me collect items and store in my in-game house exactly like I would in real life.

Cool, collecting lots of things! My kids also love collecting stuff..

I can definitely relate to the RPG inventory management! There's something fascinating about just picking up stuff and bringing them back to your in game house!

I love reading, playing online games, and running. I only get to do it once a week, but running is my favorite. Every weekend, I go to a nearby park and just run for about 4km. I'm kinda slow so it takes me 1 hour to finish. Though, given how slow I am, it's mostly a mix of short running sprints and long walks.

Another runner! It seems to work for many people, but not for me! But we all have different ways to relax.

True. As long as we have a hobby to help us relax and de-stress. It doesn't really matter what that hobby is.

I like to go fishing in a quiet place and find really cool stuff. I also love collecting silver just for fun because it’s shiny and just a cool item to have.

Yours truly, Tornadoman

Fishing in a quiet secluded place sounds like a relaxing hobby! I'm starting to get interested in the precious metals collecting, do you have any tips on where to begin?

I think you should buy a few ounces now because on the charts it appears there will be another spike.

I'll take a look! Thanks!

Wew, I am late for the mass-gathering. Anyways, hobbies...

  1. My biggest hobby is playin' and recordin' video games. I used to maintain a YT gaming channel with the content I played. The mass majority of content is non-commentary and it's fun to record such, but I despise doing commentary lest I am with friends. Otherwise, the pure enjoyment from playing games is what keeps bringing me back to gaming.
  2. Reading books is another one I like. Just thinking of how the words are placed, how they relate to the content of the book, imagining how the book would look like in a moving picture and also how the Subject of and material conditions the author was in to even create the book is what keeps me coming back to books.
  3. Listening to and playing D&D campaigns. This I consider the ultimate form of a Second World (Roleplay) that we can immerse ourselves with a World of different nations, theories, histories, cultures and economies is just great to use to launch entire stories and characters forward. (I mention Second World and not Suspension of Disbelief for a good reason, but I'll not humour a defense here.)
  4. Exercising is another great one to just commit to. Other than the empirical-reasoning of exercising for a healthy body, there comes the benefit of achieving the "Good Life" (or eudaimonia in Greek) that includes that and becoming more and more sane with every exercise.
  5. To end this all off, this Steemit account. Face it, this follows with you to as well and I don't have to really state why I keep coming back, but I shall do so as to humour the contest. I keep coming back because of the aspects of a rising community, to lead curation groups, developing content for a platform, becoming popular in a niche on Steemit and having people genuinely liking your content. What is there to not like other than the negative repetitions that are manifest in other parts of the internet and a need of updated structure for Steemit?

It's a great list of hobbies! Although I don't do the exercise part, my wife keeps suggesting it. Maybe this summer I will be swimming more... Or cycling...

I used to do DnD gaming, but these days it is so hard to get a group together. The people I used to play with are on the other side of the world!

Oj me Flyin’ Dutchman, that’s sad about the D&D Group. Otherwise, I don’t know how to help you into getting into exercising but doing some sparodic and small exercises every hour can at least keep one not bored.

Well! Entering just under the wire!

You're just like I am. Gaming is my hobby, has been since I was a kid, though I didn't realize it at the time.
See, my folks didn't GET gaming. They'd wonder why I'd want to spend my brainpower doing something so unproductive. They were ok with chess and even the occasional round of poker, but anything more complex they just didn't seem to derive any joy from, and I felt like they actively discouraged me from playing games, though they didn't go so far as to prohibit it, except in the case of video games (I was forbidden from buying a console, though once we got the internet, I found ways to play games online).

Anywhoodles, so as a kid I discovered Magic: the Gathering... Well, let me tell a little about that, because I think my early M:tG years were a bit... odd. Maybe interesting?

We had lived in Seattle when I was a baby, but moved to Wisconsin when I was 5. We visited Seattle once a year, and I had a friend I had kept in touch with over the years. 1993 rolls around, and she introduces me to this WONDERFUL game called magic, I mean, my imagination just explodes after playing it one day with her. I don't have any cards, but suddenly everything around me is vibrant with their potential to be Magic cards - the farm fields are plains for me to summon my horse (who has wings and is a Mesa Pegasus) the hill of clay from the excavated pond is my mountain, and I am the one summoning the lightning in the thunderstorms. There are no islands around, but there are legit swamps and forests near me.

I don't know how it got in my bones, this gaming thing. I didn't get it from my folks, (unless I did, and it's just a different expression of their passions for physics, computer science, and creative storytelling). But yes. Every year, my wife and I host Thanksgaming around Thanksgiving time, where we gather with our friends and feed each other and are so grateful for our community, and everyone plays games!

Thank you for asking this question. I think this became a post!

Despite being being into board games, I never got bitten by the card gaming craze! I love that people are completely into it though, like that you are imagining the summoning in your surroundings!

Maybe it will be something I show my daughters, if they get interested in the card gaming, maybe it will catch on with me!

Right now my primary hobby seems to be Steemit. I'm also looking to improve my photo shooting skills so I cn posts some better photos here on this platform.

Photography and steemit seem to mesh together quite well, so it is great that you have hobbies that complement each other!

Wow, so many comments from so many people around here (so many gamers too)... As I'm also a veteran gamer, I feel identified with many people down the long list of comments...

As you can probably guess my main hobby is playing videogames, but I do have another weird hobby, which is getting to know people and learn from them. Put myself in their shoes, try to see things from their eyes... it's a weird hobby indeed, but it's actually quite... how to put it, enlightening?

Anyways, you said it yourself, I've played games from all consoles and PC, and PC gaming still is the best there is; many years later I still remember Civilization: Call to Power, Master of Orion, the original D&D. Games that were really deep and interesting. Nowadays I play games more for the thrill and the challenge... ever heard of King's bounty? I'm playing it on Impossible, and it's forced me to evolve my tactics to ridiculous levels in order to survive the onslaught. Someone suggested Stellaris and I do agree a bit, but the AI isn't polished as much as I'd like it to be; as a game, however, it's pretty nice.

That is a strange hobby (not the gaming!), but it probably what we should all consciously be doing more of. So many situations where we do easily think the other person is acting with evil intent, but just some understanding can lead to a better realisation of what is happening... Instead of relying on the knee jerk reaction.

I loved King's bounty (and the expansions!), I never finished it, but the idea was really great! Another game to load onto my laptop for travelling!

Wow, that was a quick reply!, and yes, to me it's a hobby, it's actually quite fun letting your imagination wander and trying to put yourself into someone else's shoes...
For example, when I imagine you, I think of a person sitting in front of a piano, trying to cram into a musical piece a lot of experiences, I imagine the face of a person who sits and looks at the screen thinking inside... what new things will I learn today, what new experiences I will experiment today?

Letting my imagination fly with everyone I meet and trying to think in their motivations also kind of inspires me, and helps me discover sides of me that I didn't knew I had... it's true that we should do it more consciously, but for those of us who do it as a hobby, it's pretty entertaining, after all, imagination has no limits :D

Hobby is one thing and its the only thing that gives me freedom. Freedom from stress and freedom to love my doings. I can't imagine my life without my hobbit. Maybe I would be a zombie after all the stress and those tiring moments from work, from thinking and from desolutions of life's mystery. Indeed it worth my time and effort. So my hobby is writing a diary. I guess lots of ideas wanted to come out in my mind so I bursted it out through writing. I also loved writing poems and sometimes writing a song. I loved singing too. But the best hobby is sleeping lol! Yes after I get bombarded with lots of stuff in the office, I think I should take a break!

I also loved crafting...making a diy or do it yourself project. That's why some of my neighbours quickly come over @ my house for a reason that their children has a project to be done so it can't be done without me so thanks to me anyway.

What's best for the eyes is can be something to be fond about. I am a pet lover. I have three bettas, 6 guppies for breeding, a tinfoil barbs, Id shark and two angel fish. They are my babies. Having a pet can lessen the stress or even anxiety. It is the best way and loving myself more than anything else...

Wow, I never knew anyone that wrote a diary! I guess Steemit and #ulog is a great match for you then!

My daughter is really into crafts and just making stuff... one of her friends recently asked "Why does she keep making things?"... I guess she just finds it really enjoyable, and it is great to see her just design and make things!

Pets we don't have, but if I would have one it would be a cat! But my wife wants a dog....

thanks @bengy for reading bout my hobbies. I appreciated it! cat and dog would be make it a good partner

my hobby is drawing, I also try to make it my job from time to time, but it's always a dangerous thing that can easily kill inspiration! So I keep it very low on commissions and try to only draw when I feel like it, so it doesn't become something I feel guilty about not doing, cause yes that has happened from time to time! I recently lost inspiration because my laptop died and I used it to look for reference photos and inspiration and even though it is beautiful to draw from imagination, it wasn't what I felt like just then. Now I am sitting on my completely new - second hand, but almost new! laptop and this is the first thing i write on it!
I guess my computer is a part of my hobby. I was very excited about this new one, but now I feel a bit hmm.. I have to get to know you, writing wrong on the keyboard because the letters are different distance than my old and the screen is smaller than I thought and.. stuff.. but I hope it grows on me!

I'm honoured, this is was your first thing that you did on your new (-ish) computer! Hope you two can get to work together well! I know the feeling of getting used to a new friend!

I know the feeling also of having a "hobby" as a profession (I'm a musician). It can be tricky at times (especially when things are not going well) to remember that it is the thing that you really enjoy doing!

This is so timely, the perfect time to go back to steemit again, so with that thank you. I have a few hobbies but I'll share 2 only hehe. First, I love to write and paint to let the stress out. Whenever I feel tired and Demotivated I sometimes find time to redeem my artsy soul. I mean seeing different fonts and colors is so relaxing hihi. Also, it allows me to unleash my creativity as well. So even if I feel so tired from work or any activities, if my inner self-wanted to create something I always end up with my brush pens and paint brush. In the same way that I'm relieving my stress, I was able to develop and made a progress in my craft. But before I do some art, especially paint my other hobby that is also my stress reliever is to watch movies/anime while eating some food. You might wonder why I watch before I paint, it's because most of my landscape is based on sceneries from the movie/anime I watched. It also drives me to explore and improve more. Hihi

Well I guess that is my two ultimate hobby. 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

Writing and painting are a great match... I wish I could paint ( or draw), but unfortunately I never really trained those skills, and I have no natural talent... also, I find colours difficult to match, I'm never allowed to dress our kids anymore!

It's great that you can take inspiration from the anime movies, and then improve with your imagination!

It's always seems difficult to start with but you'll get along soon if you tried your best hihi. I'm still a novice in this craft but surely I enjoyed evey single small victories in this journey.

Oh I like this week's question, simple and straight forward.

I remember myself getting into this hobby when I was in the University days, and took on my major because of it as well.

I really enjoy building computers, from the hardware to the software. Not just expensive and powerful machines as well, I build mini PCs for home server or media hubs. I like to fiddle with tiny machines like the Raspberry Pi.

Somehow being able create, build and program these custom computers, made me relax, its like playing with Lego when I was a kid again hahaha.

Glad you liked the question! I was hoping to do something a little more involved, oh well, next time!

I love building computers but it gets to be a bit of an expensive hobby! The last one I built was about 1 and a bit years ago, packing some seriously powerful hardware into a little chassis! It is something that is really serving me well as a gaming package, but it is a complete pain in the arse to work inside! I think next time, I am going back to full tower...

The S4 mini is what I ended up building in:

... however, some people are crazy and stuff some seriously epic components in there!

Oh man, 1080ti in one of these? SUPER cool lol, and super expensive.

Yep, these modder are crazy nuts!

I have a couple hobbies, Music being one, and I used to do a lot of gaming but haven't for many years other than with the kids. My main hobby has always been computers.
My dad brought home a computer when I was in the first grade and I was hooked. A Tandy TRS80 with 16k of RAM. I actually think that's why I excelled at reading, I would sit there for hours with a Tandy magazine (that I couldn't read) and type in the programs in letter by letter.
I pretty much always had a side business dealing with computers, either building them or fixing them. Then I had an opportunity to make it my career and I haven't looked back since.
So I now get paid well to work on my hobby. Much of the time stuff I would do for free on my own, just on a larger scale. That's when work is really enjoyable. I actually have to make myself quit working to do other things...

That's great when people pay you to do your hobby! I've always enjoyed building computers, but it can be an expensive hobby. Enjoyed fixing them a lot less... Trouble shooting stuff can be annoying.

At the moment I have a problem between plex and our qnap nas. Not sure what it is, we have a terrible hack of a solution, but it would be a lot better if the two played nicely...

Did it happen after an upgrade? Are you using the Plex viewer or something else?

I'm using the plex viewers. We weren't using it for a while so there has been so many changes to everything, making it pretty hard to troubleshoot.

Several nas firmware updates, a couple of plex updates and a move to a mesh network....

I see a number of people have issues with qnap and plex, so I will probably start down that lead when I have time!

That's the direction I would probably take. Especially if you are using the native plex viewer, I know there are a load of issues caused by other viewers.

My hobby or hobbies are all along the same route. I love to craft. My jewelry that i make is made up of shells, sea glass, and seeds.

The sea glass and shells i gather from hours and hours of diving in the ocean. Or walking the beachs . Its so nice and relaxing to even do that part of my hobby. The seeds are gathered only when its season. So depending on the seed i need, i either have to hike mountains or up rivers. My family and i use to have great times doing this together. A pair of earrings i made with Maui miter shells .

Sometimes it takes me months to find a pair of shells that match up in size, color etc . Its all hard work.

FB_IMG_1532476877484.jpg

Then sitting down and putting the design together takes lots of patience and effort due to I dont like to copy others work so, i think alot of what will look good as well as sell.

Anyway thats about it for now thank you for doing this great contest. You have my 100% support 💋

Yes, I love your creations and am looking forward to ordering a couple for my kids (and maybe wife...)! It's great that you are able to include the whole process (diving and walking) from discovery through to the making!

My one hobby that helps clear my brain, blow off steam, and centre myself in a brain-dead haze... is also gaming! :)

For me it can be a more than just a relaxing hobby; I use it to combat my occasional writer's block. There are a couple of games - Minecraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Stardew Valley - where I can completely phase out of reality and mindlessly play the game while embedding myself in my own little world. Next thing I know two hours has passed, it's bed-time, and I have ideas again!

Minecraft is particularly good for that... underground, digging away, only surfacing to clear inventory and make new tools; digging is a mindless activity, but it's somehow therapeutic and idea-inspiring. :)

Ps, I notice the games you mentioned are games with player emergent narratives instead of a directed narrative. Does that get the writer's block moving?

Oh I would definitely recommend Stardew Valley! The developer did such an amazing job on it, and the whole thing was created by just the one guy. It's so much fun! I never really got into the old Harvest Moon games but I'm so glad I gave the Valley a try. Have spent a couple hundred hours in it and don't regret a single one of them.

How is the Switch? I was looking at possibly getting one for the family at around Christmas time and I like that it's both a handheld and a TV-attached console... at the same time I worry about 5yr-old-hands. But I do like a lot of the games that are available on it!

With the Elder Scrolls Online I find that there are three types of people - those that don't like it because it's not Skyrim Online, those that don't like it because it's not a World of Warcraft Clone, and those that treat it like it's own game and enjoy it. :) I love it. I'm not really a multiplayer person, just trudge around and do my own thing. I find it's pretty balanced in terms of single-player activities and multi-player.

I'm rambling and finding it hard to stop. But with the games mentioned... it's not so much the player-directed narrative that gets the mind flowing, but the mindless activity. In Minecraft it's just dig, dig, digging with no thinking involved. In ESO it's running around harvesting all the things to sell in my guild store, another mindless activity. Stardew Valley is a teeny bit more thinking, but I can still phase out into my own little world. :) I never really thought of the player-directed fact before... that could be a subconscious part of it too!

Woohooo, another gamer!

I tried Minecraft, somehow, it just didn't grab me. I've loved all the Elder Scrolls games (although, I wasn't so fond of it on the Switch), and I just loved playing them on PC.... but somehow, the idea of the multiplayer aspect stopped me from even trying the Online version. Maybe, someday...

Stardew Valley is sitting on my Switch ready to play! I've heard such good things about it, and I'm going away this week on tour, so I'm looking forward to trying it out!

I hear you about inventory... there is something oddly soothing about pack-ratting and managing stuff!!!

Firstly, I feel your pain regarding removing the bar from your toddler's bed! Keep fighting the good fight, but from our previous conversations, your toddler sounds the way mine was; I was so impressed and frustrated with his stamina and bullheadedness haha

As for hobbies, I like writing posts on steemit.

Kidding! I do, but that's not it. My new hobby, now in Mexico, is to go out for a nice long bike ride, then make my way to the ocean and if the seaweed allows, go for a swim or simply sit, breath in the salty air, and relax. It's the only place these days where I seem to be able to completely empty my mind and just be.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Haha... maybe I should include a free downvote for every "STEEMIT!!!!"

It is nice to be able to go for a ride and swim, and from what I see of your photos, it does seem like the perfect place to do it! Just getting away and being alone with yourself for a bit is a great way to wind down!

haha that would be funny!

Yes, that's it exactly...being alone with myself :) You're a smart cookie @bengy :)

Interesting contest. So shall we begin?

Although i am gamer and in general big fan of games my laptop can't afford to play all these knew amazing ones :P so i had to find ''another hobby'' My current hobby or hobbies for 3-4 years now are divided to 2.

  1. Watching series-anime

When i want to relax i just put a series or an anime and just watch it. I can say i am so addicted that i can't stop after watching a single episode. The reason i like series and anime instead of movies is that the total time is more than in a single movie so more enjoyment and also the characters can be further developed and as a result we can bond with them. Also anime mix the real with the imaginary in a way that not even movies a series could do that. Also as the episodes are way more, (some have up to 500 episodes) the plot can be way to complicated and advanced.

  1. Going out for a coffee with my friends. It may seem such a simple thing but the essence of life lies in simplicity. I really enjoy going out with my friends for just a cup of coffee not something fancy as a club or a bar because there we can talk, i can see them, share our problems and laugh. I like face to face communication especially when that also include going out of my home and that's something that not only relaxes me but filling me as a person!

I find that I have a different set of games on my laptop (when I travel) compared to my desktop (when I'm at home). I have to say, the newer Nvidia cards (1050/60/70/80) that you find in laptops these days have really closed the gap between the two. On my laptop, I have mainly strategy and RPG games, whereas the main computer at home has the FPS and graphics heavy stuff....

I never tried anime, I knew many people who were into it, but it never really grabbed me... although, the last one I watched (tried to watch) was about 20 years ago....

Ah yes, going out for a coffee is much more engaging than going to a club or a bar, where you can't really hear each other. I do prefer meeting friends at a cafe, it does seem more engaging than the loud sounds and colours of other places....

i think everyone will love anime. The graphics have advanced are in whole different level than before and also there is a huge variety like in movies and series. For instance you may checked a martial art anime whereas you don't like that genre and you prefer horror or mystery.

I did exactly that to some friends that never seen anime before. i asked them what genre they like and then showed one of the top anime of this category!

I know a few that gaming is their hobby as adults. I find the stigma that its a kids hobby slowly disappearing.

As for my hobby, I like to play poker and have done so for years. Less so in the last few years but there was a time that I would play daily and ran my own poker forum. My hobby is unique in the sense that I can make money from it instead of spend money on it. The biggest tournament I won was online for about $10 , 000.

Wow 10 grand! Do you only play online or do you also try your luck at the casinos as well? I only know the basic version of poker, I don't know all those variants....

I only play online .. I rarely visit a casino. If you like gaming you will likely like playing poker as well, its addictive.

Oh, potentially dangerous for me then....

My hobby is to write my own poem.
I've written around 50+ poems in and some of them are in English and some are in Bengali.

I think my emotion from my teenage encouraged me to start writing some poems of my own.
Then I started to write poems and I like to express my sad life story and my emotion though my poems.

in case you want to see; you can see some of my poems through this link where you'll find some other poems too.

Great that you can express yourself in poetry! I'm afraid it is a skill that eludes me, but I'm impressed by people who can do it!

You should try it sometimes.
It's a great thing to do.
most of all, if you can dedicate a poem of your own to your loved ones then you'll be so happy.

I feel like it may be a little boring, but reading. Both fiction and non-fiction. It's calm, quiet time to myself and the fiction allows me some escapism while the non-fiction, which I often choose to be outside my areas of expertise, always makes me feel like I'm growing.

Reading is a great pastime that isn't so common anymore. I used to read alot, I always carried a book around with me. Often non fiction... Or maybe sci-fi..

For me going for a walk on the beach or anywhere for that matter with my camera is my way to relax, if I cannot be out walking its like I am doing this evening Editing the photos I have taken on earlier walks, I am a pretty hyper person my mind is always going 100 miles an hour, photography helps me to slow down and relax

I've never tried to edit photos, I just take what comes (or the crazy stuff that the google assistant throws me...). But I can imagine that it would be relaxing, just tweaking things to get it just right!

@bengy I shoot in a moda called Raw in my camera, ie the camera does no editing, as I like doing that myself these days, on some photos I can spend well over half an hour editing them

"I'm writing this post as my brain is completely fried after a non-sleeping night with the toddler..." ahah, Parents will relate. Funny thing is: we always think it gets easier as they grow up (mine is 3 and a half)... but anyway I won't spoil it for the parents of newborns.

My Hobby is MUUUUUSIC!!! YEAHHH!! I've been doing it for over a decade now and, please, please, please, do come to our profile and tell the band what you think (check for the posts in DSound!)

Love,
WM

I plan on returning the favour when I'm old and senile...

Music is a great way to relax, playing and listening! I will check your band later!

I had some casual habits.

1.Taking part at @bengy contest can be called as one of my best hobby that I ever had.I found myself addicted to his fun contest.

2. ***No sport, nothing with music, my habit is related with entertainment with my mind by creating new series of my fiction. That nobody know just me and my mind. I just wanted to create another part of my existing collection. A new character, a new hero each time.*** ***I do this not on blank paper but in mind, just as I am playing a movie.*** Thanks..

Creating fiction in your own mind? I can see that would be relaxing! But you never have the urge to share it with others?

In sooth, I know not if I had any urge now. I used to have that. I shared my fiction with my friends and my mom!

@bengy has set 0.500 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png
What is a bounty exactly?

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

How can I earn a bounty Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.
