All around the world today, we are witnesses to technological advancements. Blockchain technologies and other technologies had contributed their quota to digitizing the world.
However, certain problems still evolve and might likely not stop if not checked.
At the moment, some companies and organizations utilize the Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in driving their operations. It had been reported that billions of dollars are spent yearly on the purchase and maintenance of IoT sensors.
Despite the huge financing it gets, IoT sensors offer little to the investments of these companies. They are stored in silos and walled gardens and flows across gateway operators such as control panels and telecom companies.
IoT have high marketability with their 2019 expected output estimated at 1.2 trillion USD by the year 2019. Another estimation states that about 10% of generated IoS data will be sought after by a multiple of 3 and the anticipated value of locked data will be about $120 billion by the year 2019. Most often, these IoS data are left to wilt away when they could have been converted into some other useful venture.
Introducing DataBroker DAO: IoT Sensor Data Monetization
With the losses recorded by companies as a result on non-utilized data, DataBroker DAO came forward to solve this problem. Its aim was not just to solve the problem but to find alternatives that could be used in monetizing these data. We are almost technologically-inclined and at the moment, we have one technological initiative or the other in our lives. We have our smartphones for instance which extracts information about us through its sensor. What happens to the extracted information? Basically nothing!
We have a whole lot of littered information that are not put to usefulness. These data are stored in silos and can only serve limited purposes and the possibility of utilizing them in some other application is nil.
DataBroker DAO is here to dust these wasted data back to life and use them as means of generating income for the companies that own them. DataBroker DAO is a blockchain-based network that is set to monetize and turn then neglected IoT sensor data into revenues.
A Quick Look at the Problem
The problem rocking some companies is that they are good at collecting data but have difficulties in implementing such data to good use. Companies like Facebook have a huge database of over 10 billion individuals in the world and yet, they are somewhat clueless on how to convert the information they have into money.
Apart from being a source of income, these data can serve as a step towards solving some pertinent issues not just in the companies they are found, but for the general wellbeing of everyone. The reverse had been the case as nothing positive had been done towards that aspect.
The marketability of IoT sensors had gone above $600 billion USD globally. These include software acquisition package and installation/maintenance of these sensors. The data gotten from this are primarily left to the discretion of the owners who most times, are not properly utilized but rather stored away in silos.
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data into the blockchain technology had seemed a better prospect but with the recent perception that they are primarily for the sensor owners’ use, it seems its fame is waning. The potentiality of the sensor data industry is very intimidating and could have been a veritable stream of income if well-harmonized.
How can this be solved?
DataBroker DAO had given us some breakdown of how it intends to achieve full monetization of the IoT sensor data.
DataBroker DAO came up with a Peer-To-Peer approach which is based on Smart Contracts. The Smart Contract feature of DataBroker DAO hinged on the Ethereum network allows sensor owners place data generated from their sensors up for sale through gateway operators.
DataBroker DAO’s goal was to bring different sensor data participants such as network owners, data processors and sensor owners to a decentralized platform where there’ll be accurate distribution and sale of data. It basically wanted a marketplace where anyone can sell or buy data and this it did by establishing a blockchain-based sensor data marketplace.
DataBroker DAO Stakeholders
There are four major stakeholders found on the DataBroker DAO’s platform.
• Gateway Operators: Gateway Operators are shareholders in DataBroker DAO and they can come in forms of GSM network or LORA network. Gateway Operators allow sensor owners sell their data on their platform.
• Sensor Owners: Sensor owners are into purchase of IoT sensors and put them up for sale through the DataBroker DAO Platform. Sensor owners are simply stakeholders who sell data from their sensors on the DataBroker DAO platform.
Data Processors: These are basically data buyers who purchase data sensors in bulk with the aim of making a huge profit from its sales.
• Data Buyers: Data Buyers are stakeholders who purchase data sensors from Sensor owners and Data processors.
Potential DataBroker DAO Data Buyers
These following groups are among the targeted audience for DataBroker’s sensor data:
• Environmental agencies
• Academics
• Energy corporations
• Smart City initiatives
• Public transport
