The BMI chart has caused so much controversy in my weight loss coaching career. People hate it! They have big bones and big muscles and so the chart does not apply to them.
I hated this chart too when I was morbidly obese and my big bones were part of the reason for that. Then when I lost weight down to the “Normal” range, Poof! My big bones turned into bird bones!
One of my hobbies now is taking the fingers of one hand and wrapping them around the bones of my other wrist. Tiny, tiny, tiny! My wrists used to be HUGE and I would have an inch or more gap if I tried to wrap my fingers there.
Here is my work around so you can use the BMI numbers to your benefit.
My link is for the Standard Body Mass Index calculator by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. you can enter your numbers in metric or US.
You do not have to use the published scale! Just because the government says 30+ is obese, does not mean it is true. Make your own scale. Here’s how I do the BMI:
- At some low point – you are severely underweight <<< you have health issues
- If you are under 18 – you are underweight <<< some very unique people are ok this thin
- If you are between 18 and 27 – you are normal
- If you are between 28 and 33 – you are overweight <<< some very unique people are ok this heavy
- If you are over 33 – you are obese <<< you have health issues
- If you are over 43 – you are morbidly obese <<< you have severe health issues
- If you are over 53 – you are super-morbidly obese <<< you have very severe health issues
If you are on the edge of one of the healthy numbers - don’t stress! – just keep your eye on it. If you are above 35 or 36 – you already knew you have a problem. The numbers are the numbers. The weight ranges for BMI are flexible and you should make your own for piece of mind.
We are all numbers on this chart – like it or not. The ranges are about where you feel comfortable. My highest BMI was 47. Most of my life I was over 40. I was morbidly obese before I ever heard of this darn chart.
Today I am BMI 26. Living 50 years with obesity means I have a lot of “loose skin” since losing weight. If I had surgery to remove this skin, many pounds of weight would be gone and I would be a lower BMI. But I do not care and have no plans for surgery.
26 BMI is fine for me now at the age of 60. I know I can get below 25, and have done it a few times since losing “half my size.”
I am happy were I am.
I was so unhappy at BMI 47.
No scale will change my feelings.

Firstly, congratulations on the success you've had with improving your health and achieving weight loss goals :)
Secondly, I'm hoping you might have some advice...my mother went on the keto diet a few months ago, did intermittant fasting for a while, followed all the protocols etc and is using a mobile phone app to record her weight and enter calrories eaten each day etc...she's been quite successful and recently achieved her weight loss goal - her problem is that now she is starting to go beyond her goal and is continuing to loose weight (she told me the other day she entered her details into her app and it came up with a red warning message saying she was now in a calorie deficit). Now her goal is to figure out how to stop loosing weight and maintain at the level she wants without startinbg to put the weight back on again. She is doing her own research on this but if you have any tips or ideas or can point me in the direction of some reputable resources I would be very greatful to pass the info on to her.

I suggest she stop focusing on calories and start focusing on nutrition. We have 31 essential nutrients, and you can track them too. Trying to get all these is an effort well worth it.
When you only focus on calories, you might not be getting all of these. Start with 1-3 of them and see how it goes.
For example, selenium can be obtained with a few Brazil Nuts each day. Iodine with fish, eggs, and seaweed among other things. Going for these items will broaden her diet.
Big congrats to your mom, and thank you for the compliments, @moz333. I too had a time when my weight got too low, but now I am settled in after 8 years.
Please reply again after she looks at this with progress or any questions.
