4 Awesome Dog Movies To Watch at Home
When it comes to living indoors with your precious paw friends during these tough times, it’s not a bad idea to kick back and relax with a movie or two. Over the last few weeks we’ve been slowly digesting a collection of movies that make us feel warm and tingly. With some old and new doggo movies coming out over the years, let’s take a look at 4 dog movies that you should watch at home in your spare time.
Togo (2019)
Let’s start off with something a little more recent! Togo is a film from Disney is the retelling of the 1925 serum run that ran from Seward to Nome across Alaska. It’s a powerful story that shows a growing between Leonhard Seppala (played by Willem Dafoe) and his beloved Husky dog, Togo. This is a must see for dog lovers. We’re always swept away by the story of Togo who was once seen as weak and unruly puppy grow into a canine hero. Get ready for a handful of dog sledding suspense that shows just how important caring for the working dog has been in society. We salute Togo and all the other dogs who traversed many miles in unfavourable conditions to save lives.
101 Dalmatians (Animation and Movie)
Continuing the theme of Disney movies, the story of 101 Dalmatians is one that has always stuck with us during our childhood memories. One Hundred and One Dalmatians by Walt Disney was an iconic movie and Cruella de Vil remains as that devil woman, madly obsessed with making dog-skin coats. The Dalmatian is one of our favourite dog breeds and hails from Croatia and this movie hits home in a magical Disney kind of wave, showing dogs are family and they are to be respected and loved. Curl up on the sofa with your pooch and run through the animated classic that was originally released in 1961. It has a fabulous soundtrack and a live adaptation followed a few decades later in 1996. There are a couple of sequels and spinoffs available too. A new Cruella movie is due to drop in 2021 but we’ll hold off on commenting about that until we see it with our own eyes and pups.
Beethoven (1992) & Beethoven’s 2nd (1993)
Oldies but goldies and no the retriever kind. Beethoven is the story of a majestic St. Bernard dog named Beethoven (played by Chris). We always remember this as the big dog movie that takes us on roller coaster family adventure. This sweet tale might be the perfect flick to put on if you’re thinking of getting a dog or trying to convince someone at home of getting one. Dogs can be big and the Swiss St. Bernard is a giant in the canine world. Despite its colossal stature, these dogs are known to be one of the friendliest and caring giant doggos one could meet. Give Beethoven a chance as a classic movie to enjoy with your family and friends.
Hachiko Monogatari ハチ公物語 (1987) & Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
We love true dog stories and Hachiko Monogatari is a heart wrenching true story of bonding and loyalty between Professor Ueno and Akita dog, Hachi. Akita dogs (Akita Inu) come from northern Japan and are widely adored by the nation and international dog lovers. There are two branches of the Akita lineage that are American and Japanese. If you’ve ever been curious about the Akita dog or wondered why many know of this breed, the story of Hachiko is at the very heart of Japanese culture and it shows how loyal our canine companions are, in both life and death. Hachiko waited until the very end and this is testament to how many dogs come to love their owners. For anyone who has ventured around Tokyo, Shibuya station is home to a Bronze statue of Hachiko. Be prepared to read some subtitles if you don’t understand Japanese, it’s worth it.
For those who wish to view a remake, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, starring Richard Gere may be a sufficient retelling.
