"To help others realize their dreams through education, mentorship, and community engagement
Mission
- To give entertainment based entrepreneurs in rural communities a chance to succeed through education and engagement.
- To give those that have an idea a place to experiment and see where the idea takes them.
- To build a place for people to work, play, and inspire others.
Rational
Maker spaces, coding boot camps, computer clubs, and other semi-vocational activities are hard to come by in rural areas. Schools and libraries try to pick up the slack by offering some of these as electives or as special summer programs to whet the appetites of the participants, but fall far from being a solution to the issue. The world of digital entertainment is becoming more and more competitive and like athletes, and musicians those that truly want to excel in the digital areas must go beyond the class room, beyond the special programs. A way to get an edge on the competition. Vague Entertainment will be that edge.
Overview
Courses
The purpose of education should not only be to impart knowledge, but to enrich the lives of the students. With that in mind the courses include not only instruction and guidance in how to make a product, but also how to build a portfolio showcasing that work. Each student will come up with their own idea, their own assets, and create a cohesive experience from those elements. During the first half of each class we will go over how to implement the base elements of the project, which will include any or all of the following: engineering, coding, and design. The second half of the class will have the students modifying those elements, and through guidance the individual projects will diverge becoming as individual as the students. At the end of the course, there will be an event where the students showcase their work and get feedback from the larger community.
Courses will include:
- Board game design and creation*
- Video Game design and creation
- Toy Design prototyping and create on demand services*
- Digital art (animation, 3D renders, etc.)
Each course would have a subset of classes with overlap between every course. The courses should be treated more akin to music lessons or martial arts, where the student is constantly honing their skills. So whether the student is on their 5 game after 5 months of classes, or still on their first as long as they are progressing and truly learning during the time at Vague Entertainment then we consider it a success.
*Classes that require physical assets such as pieces or models may be postponed until a suitable location can be afforded and 3D printers installed.
Class size and times
Due to the complexity of some of the work, and the time required, classes will be kept around 5 students in the beginning. The courses will be held in the evening Monday - Thursday between 5:00 and 8:00 pm. Normal classes would take place on alternating days giving each student 2 hours a week of direct instruction. A student can enroll in the same course during different time slots if there is an opening available however the student will need to pay for each course as if they were separate.
Special Summer "camps" might be made available if there is a need or a demand for them. In this case a months worth of work will be compressed into a weeks worth of time. The tuition for these classes may be higher, but they may also include special events or themes that might offset the increase.
Ownership
Anything created by a student during any course will be the property of the student, including all Intellectual Properties they create. If the student wishes to sell the item through Vague Entertainment the proceeds will be split 80/20 where the student receives the larger portion. The amount split between the two parties will be the net income of the sell after taxes, and other fees are deducted from the price. The proceeds can also be used to offset or eliminate the cost of the courses up to but not exceeding the cost of the course. Publishing outside of Vague Entertainment is encouraged and assistance will be there if necessary.
Vague Entertainment has the right to use images, videos, of the products created by the students for promotional reasons.
Note: Labor laws and other external factors may not allow those under the legal working age to get direct funding from our courses.
3 Year plan
As with all plans things may change depending on demand and funding.
- Year 1: Find funding for 6 laptops and begin classes as early as July of 2019. Within the year I expect to have 20 students spread out between 4 classes that will continue through out the year.
- Year 2: Opening a brick and mortar location and extending hours to grow the number of students. This will include the purchase of several 3D printers and other hardware to streamline the creation process.
- Year 3: First non in house "arcade machine" should be completed to extend the reach of the student's work into the community. Class sizes may increase at this point which will require the hiring of additional employees to continue giving all students the attention they deserve.
