[Education in Uganda #1] Current situation

Hello STEEMIT. Our previous posts dealt with microfinance, which is one way to help East Africa until they may stand on their own feet. But microfinance has its limitations in bringing about sustainable development. A lot has to come in advance for Africa to free itself from financial aid, and education is definitely a major milestone in doing so. Let’s find out some more about education in Africa.

Since our orphanage is located in Nankoma, we’ll narrow our subject to Uganda. Let us first introduce the current educational status in Uganda.

Owing to the mandatory education policy which guarantees elementary & secondary school education to every citizen, South Korea holds an exceptionally low education exclusion rate. Uganda, on the other hand, shows very high education exclusion rate. According to UNICEF’s 2016 statistics, up to 80% of the children enter primary school but only 25% manage to graduate. Despite the government’s effort to provide free public education to all, realistic problems such as issues with funding, teacher training and lack of facilities hinder progress.

Significant disparity exists between primary & secondary school enrollment rates. Only 1 out of 10 students in primary school continue their education until secondary school, and of the 60-70 thousand secondary school graduates, merely 25 thousand get by to college education. Considering the whole population, college enrollment rates are lower than 2% in Uganda, which is very difficult to imagine in South Korea or USA.

Then what paths do the other 98% walk?
