Brazil was under dictatorship between 1964 and 1985. Our magna carta was not published until 1988. Brazil is still learning about how to be a democratic country.
Presidential elections happen every 4 years and this year's first round of votes happened on 07 October 2018. Brazilians living abroad have to vote at the nearest Brazilian Embassy. Brazilian electoral law only becomes applicable whilst an individual is inside the embassy building. Local laws apply to individuals queuing outside the embassy, waiting to vote.
Brazil is still investigating Lava Jato - an operation which arrested many politicians, including Lula - the head of the Labour Party (PT) - and which had ramifications with #PanamaPapers and #ParadisePapers.
Lula was prevented from running for election, but he enlisted Haddad to run on his place. Haddad wants to free Lula, which is an insult to all Brazilian people and to our brave judge Sergio Moro and his Federal Police team of investigators.
Brazilians are desperate to stop having so much corruption in their politics and sadly, an even worse right wing man has taken opportunity of the chaos and has risen to popularity through Evangelical church groups and the military sectors. Bolsonaro - or Shitnaro - for those who wish to express repulsion, has in the past vocalised his support of dictatorship, torture, violence against women and gay people. Brazil is already a very violent country, but he supports more guns within society. His recent statements have contributed towards the increase of Taurus company shares (an armoury company). It is possible that companies with similar modus operandi that of #CambridgeAnalytica #BlackCube #AggregateIQ and #SCL - investigated for their involvement with the Brexit and Trump elections - are also involved in Shitnaro's campaign. Other worldwide right wing groups and think tank groups are also likely to be behind his campaign.
Corruption will have even more leeway under a dictatorship.
Marielle Franco was a black lady local councillor from a left party in Rio de Janeiro and both Marielle and her driver were brutally murdered whilst returning from a political event.
#EleNao , #EleNunca and #MariellePresente is a movement against Shitnaro and is mainly backed by women and the LGBT community.
On the first round of elections, which happened Sunday 07 October 2018, many people expressing #EleNao outside Brazilian Embassies around the world suffered verbal and physical abuse - specially women. There was either none or little local police on foot patrol around the embassies. Many Brazilians living abroad do not speak the local language or they may not understand how to report a crime.
The second round of elections will happen on Sunday 28 October 2018 between 0800h and 1700h - local time at each country. Embassies have to display the results by the window after election time ends, so it is likely that groups will linger outside the embassies until the results are published.
This is a CRITICAL ELECTION and is reasonable to estimate that people expressing that they will not vote for Shitnaro, will receive either verbal or physical abuse, or both. A lot of the verbal abuse can be expressed in a whisper by a passer by holding a neutral facial expression. Verbal abuse can also be expressed from women supporting Shitnaro to women not supporting Shitnaro.
Help from local police to provide guidance and strong on foot patrol around the perimeter of Brazilian Embassies and public transport stops near embassies is required, as is the presence of local Feminist and LGBT groups who wish to show solidarity to their Brazilian counter-parts trying to fight abuse.
