Fit for Summer: Easy Tips to Get Started

To preface this post, I want to be clear that I think every person should define their own fitness goals - whether it's to start getting active and incorporating healthy eating, or to run an ultra marathon or just lift weights while watching TV - they're all valid goals and you do you.

No one else can define what "fit" means to you - and you shouldn't let them. Especially giant corporations that pay millions of dollars to make you believe you need to fit into a certain mold - male, female or anywhere along that spectrum.

Okay with all that in mind, here are some tips for getting started so you can live your summer fitness dreams - whether you're taking the first step today, or you're already close to your goal.

And what do I know about the topic of fitness? I've been a runner for the last fifteen years, but really focused on the art of running more seriously in the last seven years. Here's what I've learned from being super in shape, taking time off, trying to eat more healthily and including lots of little cheat meals.

1.) Change location to change your mind set

  • When I get into a rut and can't think about running around my neighborhood any more, it helps to change the scenery. On a local level, it could mean running to a different neighborhood, or taking the train to a different spot to start my run
  • Vacations are a GREAT time to kick start your fitness routine. You have the time, are likely indulging a bit more on food, and you'll be on your own schedule completely. Exercising in a different city/country can invigorate the senses and help you fall back in love (or like) with your work out. Pic of me below in Puerto Rico, where I ran and swam and enjoyed some good exercise while on vacation

2.) Get the right gear

  • If you're running - invest in a good pair of running shoes that you're psyched to put on in the morning (my running shoes below!)
  • Or spring for the arm band that lets you keep your phone inside, so your hands are free to lift weights or practice pilates at the gym
  • Perhaps most importantly - think about what you'll want to watch/listen to while you're working out. Download accordingly - it's a life saver. Consider creating open playlists with your friends where you can all add music that pumps you up

3.) Cut out processed foods

  • I swear by this "diet." I like it because it still means I can eat balanced, healthy meals and have lots of options
  • The general rule of thumb is: Don't eat any ingredients you can't pronounce
  • Get rid of all the fake stuff - just enjoy the whole foods. For example - you can still eat chocolate chip cookies from your favorite bakery. Just bypass the ones on the supermarket shelf that have a ton of preservatives. It's all about balance!

What are your summer fitness tips? I'd love to hear what's worked for you!
