Декоративный цветок из Центральной Америки. Имеется несколько сотен видов и садовых форм этого растения. Ряд видов его цветёт один раз в жизни, другие же, образующие цветочную стрелку в пазухе листка сбоку, могут цвести ежегодно. В Европу агава попала в начале 17 века.
Это светолюбивое растение. Летом его следует пересаживать в открытый грунт. Зимой лучше содержать при температуре 9-12 градусов по Цельсию и редком поливе. Летом поливают ежедневно и обильно. Пересаживают ранней весной в земляную смесь из дерновой, лиственной земли и песка с добавлением битых черепков или гравия. Посуда не должна быть большой. Пересадку осуществляют через каждые 2-3 года, а старые большие экземпляры можно пересаживать ещё реже. Размножается семенами и отпрысками.
На родине некоторые виды используют как текстильное сырьё, другие - как пищевые (из соцветий и цветоносов получают национальный мексиканский алкогольный напиток - пульке).
