Blueberries are rich in nutrients that benefit the body and the mind.
The benefits that can be derived from these delicious fruits are many.
Rutgers University researchers have conducted studies with lab rats in which the unfortunate creatures were given the cancer-causing azoxymethane so as to give them colon cancer.
All of the unfortunate animals were then fed a balanced diet, except that half of them received the compound pterostibene, extracted from this fruit.
The study led researchers to conclude that the supplemented rats showed 57% fewer pre-cancerous cells at the end of the study, while they also showed less inflammation and cell division in their bowels.
Other research has shown that these berries reduce the risk of getting, and can prevent the growth of, ovarian cancer in women. The fruit also is extremely high in anti-oxidants, which prevent aging. Anti-blood clotting, antibacterial, and urinary health-promoting effects have also been found to be prominent in these berries according to various researchers. Anti-blood clotting, antibacterial, urinary health-promoting, and “bad” cholesterol-lowering effects have also been found to be prominent in this Superfruit according to various researchers. The reduction of LDL (bad) cholesterol by blueberry extract is also linked to the fruit’s reputed ability to make the heart healthier.
Blueberry extract is very rich with compounds known as anthocyanosides. Clinical studies have demonstrated that anthocyanosides retard the loss of visual acuity as well as eye fatigue.
Researchers at the School of Food Biosciences and Psychology in Reading and the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter in the United Kingdom supplemented an everyday diet with these berries for a period of three months. It took just three weeks, however, for them to observe improvements in spatial working task memories of their test subjects. These measured improvements progressed throughout the remaining nine weeks.
“This not only adds science to the claim that eating blueberries are good for you, it also provides support to a diet-based approach that could potentially be used to increase memory capacity and performance in the future,” says Dr. Matt Whiteman, a leading researcher in the studies.
These berries are extremely rich in flavanoids, and it is more and more accepted that these compounds somehow help the brain to strengthen and grow new connections between neurons, connections called synapses. Dr. Jeremy Spencer, a lecturer in Molecular Nutrition at the University of Reading and the leader of the study, says, “Impaired or failing memory as we get older is one of life’s major inconveniences. Scientists have known of the potential health benefits of diets rich in fresh fruits for a long time. Our previous work had suggested that flavonoid compounds had some kind of effect on memory, but until now we had not known the potential mechanisms to account for this.”
These and other compounds with which this Superfruit are rich have also been shown in clinical research and dietary observation to strengthen the overall immune system and increase the metabolism, thus helping with weight management. These berries are one of the tastiest health benefits on the planet.
