Once a week I have a craving for Japanese food. My friend recommended one of her go-to spots in midtown-east of New York.
It’s called Momosan (https://www.yelp.com/biz/momosan-ramen-and-sake-new-york-2)
There’s a sense of space here, as it is not densely packed with tables in a way that makes it hard to get around. Of course that means during popular times you will have to wait. We came at about 5:30p, so it was just starting to fill up. The atmosphere is chill, and there was not a sense that we were being rushed through the meal, which is nice. We had plenty of time to chat about the only thing that’s been on my mind lately -- STEEMIT (I think I have a problem…)
But anyway, I was very happy with what I ordered. But specifically, this soft shell crab BAO:
I think the picture captures it even better than I remember! Lightly fried, crispy soft shell crab. If you didn’t know (I certainly didn’t until fairly recently!), soft shell crab does not need to be peeled. It was crunchy, juicy and contrasted nicely with the soft bun on the outside. Has a nice chili oil marinade as well. I think I would be happy if my entire meal was just a bunch of these. These are 8$ a pop though.
That was the warm-up to the ramen I ordered:
The Tonkotsu ramen (11$) - Bit too salty, noodles were nice and chewy, broth was creamy. Pork looks pretty, and taste-wise was acceptable. I’ve had better, but all in all, not bad for 11$. They had two sizes, small and regular, and were pushing me to get the regular size for some reason. I don’t like eating too much, and I’m glad I stuck to the smaller size.
My friend ordered this one:
Tsukemen (15$) -- You can see the noodles and goodies are separate from the broth. This is quite nice. The idea is to dip the noodles, and this gives you control over the amount of broth per bite. She let me try this, and this makes quite a difference. I liked this better than the ramen I had.
Also in the restaurant I spotted a whale:
If a fellow Steemian whale is here, it must be good! Good thing whale is not on the menu here.
But yeah, it was a nice place, was quite happy with the experience overall. Will probably revisit again when I’m strolling around the area. A small tidbit I wanted to share today. I think I mainly wanted to share the interesting soft shell crab bao. Great idea, and tasty! I can still taste it. yum...
That soft shell crab bao looks mean! Gotta try that someday!
