in food •  8 years ago

Kohlrabi is native to Northern European's, they have widely used this vegetable for years in their cuisine. This alien looking vegetable is similar to broccoli stems. The meaning of this veggie is German meaning cabbage or turnip. It has a sweet peppery flavor.

Mainly used in Germanic countries, although it's a staple vegetable in Northern India, and popular in Northern Vietnam where it is called "su hao" When purchasing Kohlrabi make sure it's firm and solid. The inside is a creamy white and a little rubbry to the taste. It is a cool-weather crop. Pant it 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost in spring. It requires 45 to 60 days to reach it's full maturity. Once harvested it keeps for several weeks in your fridge.

Different ways to eat Kohlrabi differs. You can peel and eat it like a cucumber by peeling it and cutting into slices, serve it with vinegar, soy sauce and salt. It is lovely in slaws and stirfrys. It is dynamite cooked in the oven. It's full of nutrients, minerals like copper, potassium, magnanese, Iron, calcium and very high in dietary fiber.

We are growing these right now! We had tomatoes and jalapeños last year, and we wanted to try something new. Very excited to see what it tastes like!

I love kohlrabi! Unfortunately not available in Cambodia :-) When we lived in Belgium we ate a mix of roasted kohlrabi, carrots, parsnip, and broccoli a lot! Yum!

Sounds delicious. Thanks for stopping by
