Making the perfect omelet with ease!

in food •  6 years ago

I have always found it to be quite difficult to make a successful omelet. Either the omelet would end up overcooked and spongy, with the cheese cooked too far, or the omelet would end up undercooked and runny. Not only is undercooked visually unpleasing, but it is also unsafe.

After doing some research, I found the easiest way to do it...with little effort involved. Here are the steps.

  1. First, whisk the quantity of eggs you would like to have in your omelet. I chose three for this scenario.

  2. Once whisked, add salt and pepper and 2 cups of shredded cheese. It sounds like a lot, but trust me, it will work.

  3. Add extra accoutrements you would prefer (ie. Ham, peppers, onions, etc) to the bowl that you whisked the eggs in and added cheese. I added bacon bits to mine.

  4. Fill a pot half full of water and bring to a boil.

  5. Take whisked eggs, cheese and accoutrements you've mixed in a bowl and pour the contents into a ziplock bag. Make sure that it has a tight seal to prevent leakage and remove air from bag after putting in your mixture.

  6. Once the water is boiling, place your ziplock bag full of egg mixture into the boiling water. You would think the plastic would melt on the pot edges, but it won't.

  7. Boil mixture for 11 -12 minutes, checking the contents periodically. Once the allotted time is almost up, pick up the ziplock bag with tongs and move the contents around to make sure eggs are fully cooked. If any liquid is present, place bag back in for 1 -2 minutes longer.

  8. Once timer is up, take bag out of water with tongs, open the bag and empty contents onto a plate. The omelet will slide right out.

  9. Enjoy!

Here is my finished product!

Interesting technique, I think I'll try this next time I go camping. Did you notice any difference in taste vs fixing it in a skillet?

Honestly there wasn't much of a difference in taste other than the layer of crispness you can get in a pan. Eggs were still fluffy.

I do like the cryspynes around the edges.

Look delicious! I will try, but will opmit the bacon. Thank you for posting.

I have seen people do this while camping many times. It is a really great trick. My biggest issue with making omelettes is I usually get the fold wrong and then I just end up with scrambled eggs with veggies in them. It always turns out a mess!
