A Weak Attempt To Make Mexican Food In Crimea

in food •  7 years ago

I'd like to start off with saying that Mexican food pretty much doesn't exist in this part of the world.

With that in mind, I didn't expect to find a lot of ingredients needed to make something simple, I did want to introduce my friends to a different type of cuisine anyway.

I decided to make Spanish rice, salsa, mango salad, chicken seasoned with chipotle powder and corn chips. You would laugh, but you just CANNOT buy corn chips here, tortillas or any corn products other than sweet corn puffs here.

Jalapenos are probably my favorite peppers to add to any dish, I was surprised to see some canned ones at a store in Kerch last week, since Sevastopol is a bigger city, I thought finding them here would not be a problem, I was wrong (I've never seen fresh ones in Crimea either). Well, I had to buy some other type of hot peppers, I don't even know the name haha, I guess people call them hot peppers, they were not even that hot to be honest.
Talking about that with my husband @matt-a he was wondering why people won't grow jalapenos here, seriously, why won't they, come on people, bring some mild spice into your life!

Alright, the next thing I couldn't find is black beans, let alone pintos, those are probably rare, so I had to go with kidney beans. Finding a ripe avocado was another challenge I didn't make. Oh well.

Regardless, if you ever find yourself in Crimea, and you crave some food that is a little Mexican, keep reading!

I got some corn flour (masa doesn't exist here, duhh) and decided to try to make tortillas according to this recipe on Cookpad.

I ended up creating unknown patties that sort of resemble tostadas, they were too thick to be called chips, yet I still baked them some in the oven, here is what I got:

To be honest with you, they hardly tasted like tortillas, they became hard to chew, all in all I do not recommend making chips using the recipe from Cookpad, perhaps the tortillas would be enjoyable, but I didn't try them before I baked them.

Luckily, making the chipotle chicken was pretty easy, I cheated on that one because I brought the powder from the USA with me, you can't get it here. I would suggest using your favorite spice for that if you ever decide to cook it. Sprinkle it over the chicken breast, add some salt, black pepper perhaps and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Fry over medium heat until it's cooked.

It is possible you may get distracted by a cat :)

Since I have never made Spanish rice before, I decided to go with a simple and easy recipe. Thanks to Betty Crocker's generic recipe. Although I did do a little modification:

  • skipped chili powder;
  • substitute green pepper for red bell;
  • veggie oil for olive oil;
  • substitute garlic powder for actual garlic;
  • add a quarter of yellow tomato.

It turned out decent, not sure it was Spanish in a way they would serve it at a restaurant, but it was good.

I should have probably chopped the bell pepper more finely, I didn't though. I am probably not going to make it again. Usually when I cook rice I make it more Asian than Mexican, to be honest I like it better that way too.

Salsa + Mango Salad

Those too are pretty staple and easy. I learned that actually some people bake the vegetables in the oven before making their salsa, I didn't do it though, but I will try to prepare it from cooked vegetables one day.

To make a regular salsa in Crimea, you're going to need to get:

  • a couple tomatoes;
  • a hot pepper;
  • fresh cilantro;
  • a couple clothes of garlic;
  • a handful of chopped red onion;
  • salt and lime juice to taste.

In a blender, combine all of the ingredients, but cilantro and onions, for some reason I prefer adding those two in the end. Process, add in the rest of the ingredients and it ready to serve.

Another cute distraction :)

As to the Mango salad, it pretty straight forward, you're going to need:

  • a ripe mango (couldn't find a ripe one);
  • fresh cilantro;
  • salt and lime juice to taste;
  • a half of red bell pepper;
  • a cucumber;
  • red onion.

Oh yeah, now looking at the pictures I see I also chopped some green onion for garnish, you can skip that.

Hope you enjoy these simple creations, I tried my very best to get the ingredients as close to Mexican cuisine as possible, it was hard! Nonetheless, the food turned out good!

I will see you again, meow!

Hello @nazirkhyber!! Thank you very much for the comment! Making a completely different type of cuisine with local ingredients was challenging.
Also thanks for the idea, I actually may cook something very common for crimea, or perhaps I'll make a post about things you may get at restaurants. Sea food is common here, so is crimean Tatar cuisine.
It may sound funny, but the most popular coffee would be instant coffee haha, they don't grow their own coffee here.

Different type of cuisine with local ingredients was challenging. But our brave friend kotturinn always prepare for any challenge ..... you accepted the challenge and make a delicious Mexican food for us with local ingredients. which is amazing and great.. Kotturinn we eat here Russian salad with great interest ... and easily available at all restaurants .... have you tried it or not and is this salad really Russian or just its name is Russian salad.... you are right instant coffee is an easy solution....Have a beautiful traveling and a great time...

Hmm... what kinda Russian salad do you guys eat? There are a lot of different types of salads over here, I wonder which one it is you're talking about!
Yeah instant coffee is an easy solution and it is also not even that good, but it is the reality of the area!

We never made it at our home ...... coz we don't know the exact ingredients and method ... It is available at every good restaurants in my city.....And also I don't know about other kinds of Russian salad... The kind of Russian salad that mostly available over here are consist of some boiled vegetables with mayonnaise....I don't know in detail ... but very tasty in eating....Hmmm

Boiled veggies with mayonnaise, does it have any type of meat in it as well? I'm trying to think what it could be!

No meat, just boiled potatoes some other vegetables green chili tomatoes etc. I didn't know the exact ingredients... But its too much tasty... Kotturinn I will tell you about our dishes that we prepare in our home ....when I have sometime...

Interesting... I don't think I recall this one, do you think it could be some variety of potato salad?
Please, do share some dishes from your country when you can!

Lovely photos! I enjoyed your article, not because I know anything about Mexican food, but because after living in Malaysia and then returning to the UK I try to cook Malaysian food now

Thank you and your plate looks absolutely delicious, what did you make?!

Thank you! I am vegetarian and so tofu figures highly, as does chilli! My mother in law has several chilli plants in her yard that get harvested daily!

Perhaps Mexican food is similar in that respect?

That is good, gardening is fun, growing your own food especially something that is hard to come around in your area is a great way to be able to cook something different too! I don't have a big garden this year, but it is enough for me and my husband @matt-a!

Haha! I ran into the same issues when we first moved to Cambodia. Though we were able to convince our local store to source some of the things we love and we bring a lot every time we travel. Either way, with the limited supplies I'm sure it tasted great... maybe not the Mexican flavor you were after.... but making everything from scratch with fresh ingredients always tastes good.... and luckily you brought the magic spice mix.... Like you said... spice up your life people. Have a lovely day ;)

Thanks a lot, @amy-goodrich! Indeed, people should do something about it, it would be so cool if they started growing some of the vegetables that are crucial when cooking south American meals, besides the climate allows! It was a fun experience and I see what I'd need to bring if I were to make anything over here again!

Pics and cat are very tasty))

Look at that red dish in a bowl is definitely borsch!

Thanks! I wish it was borscht hahaha

Great post @kotturinn! We too struggle to find good Mexican food on our travels. You went above and beyond, mad props :) Upvoted and followed!

Thank you, I tried haha. Where do you live?
I have noticed you can find Mexican food about everywhere (everywhere I visited at least) in the USA, over here people don't know what guacamole is though.

We are on the road, currently in Asia. In the US good Mexican food is everywhere, but no so much elsewhere. Have you seen a "taco" in France? It looks like a grilled burrito shakes head

Actually no, I haven't seen any Mexican food in France, we only stayed in Paris though haha. We were still able to eat some decent Chinese food there!

@kotturinn. Useful postings. I will try the recipe to make it.

I am from Indonesia
@nurhayati

Yeah, it was strange having to substitute a lot of ingredients to whatever was available!

Наверное вкусно, очень люблю острую пищу.

Получилось неплохо, к сожалению, удалось найти только один вид острых перцев, какие-то просто острые перцы, а еще кукурузные чипсы были не такие как должны были быть на вкус, но мы старались хаха

you got a cute kitty

It's my friend's cat, thanks!

That loos so good. I am not sure if I hate you or I love you hahaha :))

Thank you! I tried haha

Кошка главный помощник)) Выглядит очень вкусно даже на фото! Сразу захотелось хрустящих кукурузных чипсов, жаль что таких не купишь))

I upvote her comments and nearly everyone else's based on approach/content/context. But I also tend to focus on her posts because she puts a ton of effort, time, and skill into them (as you can see) and feel as though content like this actually needs rewarded. I also reward the fact that she doesn't split one long post into 5 different consecutive posts in order to milk the rewards pool (I see that as an unethical/greedy thing to do). She contributes genuine content and engages her followers; healthy use that inspires and promotes organic growth of the platform. I pass out upvotes to users that are being humble/trying to build community and wealth the right way.

She's also my wife :-).

"she doesn't split one long post into 5 different consecutive posts in order to milk the rewards pool" Hahaha are you by any chance pointing a finger at me when saying that? ^_^ Because I split my posts up into different parts :D Not for any particular personal gain, but that to accomodate for my readers :) Many have complained in the past that too much information is over-whelming, and they actually reccomended I split them up into different parts. I also see it as a nice way to build rapport, as it keeps them wanting to come back hehe :)

Bro I was like reading... Reading... Thinking... Then at the end you were like 'She's also my wife :-).' and I was just thinking to myself, 'Yup, that's it' :D

Haha, but you sound like you have a good thing going. You looking for the right things in content! Awesome stuff. Talk again sometime.

"Hahaha are you by any chance pointing a finger at me when saying that? ^_^"

Yes! Well, it was meant to be more indirect in order to ensure tact remains in place, more like a suggestion, a hint; food for thought. But I guess that it served its purpose and you acknowledged it. Buuut, come on now, man! You mean to tell me that you think that it makes it easier for you and your users if you submit a post that's split up into five posts that're covering the same topic/list?

You're doing it for a higher payout, you know it, I know it, we all know it. I mean, I get it. I'm just saying that it isn't ethical if you understand how this system was designed to work. You could consolidate your post into one post, making it easier for the user to read (it IS easier, you can't argue that clicking back and forth to read the next piece is easier than simply scrolling down) but in turn, you separate it in order to get more of the rewards pool (what pays you, it isn't infinite, btw) yet say you do it for your readers? I know it's tempting to do that, because yeah, getting more money is good/cool/fun/great/grand/etc. but your approach may need to be reflected upon.

I'm not being mean or anything, promise. I'm just trying to give good advice/point out something that I think that you could improve upon. You seem to be someone who enjoys blogging, and could surely pull in a userbase that would support you, but you're coming off a bit rushed by doing what you're doing. Just my observation.

I understand that rapport build angle for sure, but I think that people would see you as more "followable," if you drop nice, hardcore, thorough entries instead of scattering pinches of info with long tail-outs over days. But who knows, I could be wrong. I'm just commenting to criticize to hopefully help give you something to think about. I want to see this place grow. Your success is my success. My success is your success. Our success is everyone's success.

Kill it!

Also, the wife thing, that isn't the only reason. She's good! I married her for a reason haha, she has brains, too much of 'em!

Alright, first of all, I just want to say thanks for taking the time out to give me your point of view. I appreciate that. I don't think there is anything more that I value than someone else giving me constructive criticism.

I will kindly just give my honest thoughts :)

My last 'series' was the only one that ever got up to 5 parts. I usually only ever go two or three. I have actually taken quite a bit of time behind the scenes, contacting my regulars', and asking them what they prefer. Many of them told me that they don't want to read long posts. I understand exactly what you mean about it being easier for us to simply scroll down, versus going through the parts, but I'm doing it more in consideration for my regular readers. Who read when I make the post, and then do it consistently.

Also just thinking of the average person's concentration span.. Yeah, of course a long post is nice, and if you go to my earlier posts, you will see I was making some articles like you are suggesting. They were very long. However, I also noticed in my comments section, the feedback was very scattered opinions. I could tell they definitely didn't read the info, LOL! I can also safely say that I have seen a great improvement in the feedback I get from my viewers. Their responses are much more intact, and far more accurate than usual. Again, just my opinion and experiences :)

Oh and PS.. I know those footers have gotten quite long hehe. It started with a simple ending message, and kin of just snowballs :D I will look what I can do to minimize those a little. I do feel, however, that they blend pretty evenly-in with the rest of the post.. Just my thoughts :) Let me know what you think.

Look, I don't want to be that guy that simply denies the obvious. I do understand how the rewards pool works, and I know exactly what you're talking about. There's no denying it. Would I like to earn more dollars? Of course haha! But in all honesty, I am looking to build a solid foundation right now.

It's also completely understandable for you to have pointed that on me, because I understand you are looking at the overall picture. Team work to make the dream work. I got you ;) Just know I come with only good intentions.

I trust we will have a good future here :) I look forward to interacting with you, and all the other awesome people here.

PS. The wife thing, I mean, there was a reason you married her in the first place ;) It's understandable :D

I'd up-vote people for making good content...well, I do, but nobody cares cause my up-vote is only worth 3 cents. I see that yours is worth considerably more, and I like that you helping lift valuable content creators like myself.

I'm a young guy from up-state New York. I've been living out of backpack for about 10 years. Have had a very exciting life traveling the world. Now I find myself on here about three months and people like what I do with my travel tips, reports, advice, documentary like photography, and more.

I've had some other whales see value in my work and take me under their wing, it's really been the difference between me succeeding here or not. I won't lie, it can be a struggle being a excellent and unique content creator with very little help to rise up through the "follow for follow" minnow slush. As a heavy investor in the platform it would mean a lot to me for you take a look at what I do on here.

Thank you in advance.
