A little while back, I showed you a picture of my emerging Nettle field. For the past few days, I have been harvesting nettles at least once a day.
I take a shallow bowl and my scissors. I push the bowl under the area I want to harvest and pull the nettles with my scissors over the bowl.
Snip.
Snap.
And the baby nettles fall right into the bowl without getting a chance to sting me. Then, I throw them into a bowl with water to wash them, lift them with tongues into a colander and we are ready to use them for a meal.
So far, I had chicken soup with nettles, curried garbanzo beans with spinach and nettles, an omlette, nettle tea and some in a salad.
I love to eat my weeds. Do you?

The nettles are starting to grow again in my yard, I haven't harvested any so far this season but I need to. They start to grow too much and that can be difficult. I like making tea with them and eating the leaves after I drink the tea.

I like the idea of eating the leaves after drinking the tea!!! I usually mix in lemongrass and whatever else is growing in the yard, like berry leaves, mint and such. But I think I make a nettle only tea today and eat the leaves!!

Is it coriander leaf?

No, stinging nettle

The fresh ravioli with nettle I had a few years ago at Cotogna in San Francisco was amazing. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity of how its harvested.

Sounds amazing.

I want some!!

My garden has been feeding me for a few days with nettles. Love it!

yay!!

Good photo! In my childhood, my mother cooked the nettle soup. I know that it is necessary to take exactly the young nettle ... Very delicious soup turned out!

It is so good!! And so full of nutrition!!

I've never heard of "Nettle" before. So fascinating. Do you know of any particular health benefits?

yes, lots of them. They are considered a great medicine. Here is some info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urtica_dioica

Awesome! Thank you! I've been doing more research into medical herbs. Are there others you use too?

I did do this once but don't have any plants close by now. Need to catch them when they are young as you are doing.

If you know where some are - you can always harvest the seeds and then throw them into your yard :)

Wow

Stinging nettle is good for something health-wise right? What is it? Weight loss? Digestion?

Here is the wiki entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urtica_dioica

it is super high in calcium and often considered a good tea for women especially, high in all kinds of nutrients and considered a kidney cleanser and more...

Interesting. It looks like it was probably very beneficial to our ancestor's diets, particularly in the spring. I had no idea it was so widely eaten and used in so many established recipes.

I eat beat and carrot tops from my veegie garden! Either make smoothies or omelets (the beet tops). They are full of vitamins, I believe!
