While writing my previous article and researching facts, I found this game, and I'm glad I did! Nothing to Say is a brief visual novel with interesting mechanic. It's made for Ludum Dare #45. Written by Celia with the art provided by Rose.
You can play the game on Itch.io!
You play as a man on his (first) date with his girl Zoe. He wants to tell her how much he likes her but he's too nervous that he feels like has N.O.T.H.I.N.G to say. As Zoe speaks with him, responses come to his mind but he can't seem to be able to say them.
(Two letters, I need two more letters...)
In Nothing to Say, your dialog options are limited with what letters you have unlocked. You start with seven letters and you earn hearts when you make good responses to the girl.
When the conversation ends you can use the hearts you collected to unlock more letters and you're get back to the start of the game to use them to hopefully lead the conversation to another direction.
The fun of this Visual Novel is deciding which letters to choose as you know you can't say everything you want to. It also helps when you make mental notes of the missing letters you should unlock next!
Stay, I beg you!
There's no way to lose in this game but some letter choices might get you stuck. In case you can't move forward there's the option to start over from N.O.T.H.I.N.G to hopefully choose better letters the next time.
Nothing to Say takes less than half an hour to explore all the options, and each one of them feel different. I love how I became increasingly talkative as I unlocked more letters.
As the only character you interact with, Zoe is likable and she's very forgiving, If I had a SO I want her to be like her. I love her face when she's happy. The color scheme by the game's artist is very effective too.
I really recommend this game to anyone. It's fun and surprisingly relaxing. I don't think they should make it longer or shorter than it is now. Nothing to Say works best as a compact experience.
