I was rifling through Ms. M.’s basement, looking for a hose clamp, when I found it.
In the second middle drawer of her tool chest, on top of an assortment of wrenches, lay a drawing, of a robotic squirrel. Now, Ms. M. likes to doodle. I’ve seen her make many, rather awful in my opinion, drawings of flowers, trees, trashcans, and the like. Finding this odd little creature scribbled in pencil didn’t worry me. I did wish the woman would start taking drawing lessons though.
In a box of wires and widgets, I found a tiny little leg. Lightweight, with gears and screws inside and out it was an interesting sculpture. There were even curved bits on the end that looked like claws. I didn’t know Ms. M. was into metal art! I tossed the limb back into the box and continued my search for a clamp. The limb didn’t worry me and I figured that it was good to learn something new about the human.
The shelves underneath the table looked promising with lots of thin metal bits and gears overlapping the edges. I’d pulled off half of the items when something soft and fluffy met my pawtips. A bundle of gray and white fur, the exact shade of my own, was stuffed among the doodads and whatnots. Okay, now I was worried!
What was the meaning of all of this? Was Ms. M. some sort of crazed robo-squirrel creator? Was she making a fluffy tailed army to march along, taking the best bits of trash? Did robot squirrels even like trash?
Or, worse! What if Ms. M. thought of herself as an ARTIST?! Maybe she planned to fill the world with her poorly rendered images of squirrels? I wasn’t too worried about this one, it wasn’t as if her art would hurt anyone. Probably.
The idea of some poor, unsuspecting fool having a metal squirrel sculpture fall from a tree to bonk him on the head made me laugh. I was still giggling when one last thought struck me. One VERY worrisome thought.
What if she was building a robot army? Wouldn’t she need to start with one? A working prototype to suss out any kinks? Was it already out there, moving about, living among us. Or…was it in here? Was my obsession with Ms. M.’s delicious trash and watching her draw poorly because she was my creator?
Was I really, truly, the squirrel that I thought I was?
