I wish I could say I understoood, deep in my soul. I think I can give you examples, but that's just a seal balancing a ball on its nose. I want to UNDERSTAND.
I want to find the chalkboard that I wrote a love letter to my valentine on when I was in 6th grade and then erased because she wasn't really my valentine, just my friend, and besides, crushes are crushes, and no one should ever know about them. they're SECRET.
I want to find the old butcher paper that I wrote all the ideas for a brilliant collaborative piece on with the dozen other excited souls who had enough time and energy and followership that we could do it, we really could, but art is temporary, and no one really remembers it like it happened except that it was lightning in a bottle.
I want to fins out what the burnt poetry said, but I burned it because it was my soul on fire and there is a shame in burning souls. I want to find out where my lost hat is. It's probably got a secret message tucked in the brim. Probably. I'll never tell. It's a secret.
There are a million lost and found memories, and some of them are true, and some of them are just a fella shoveling poetry because he thinks they make him.... him.
Romance is a palimpsest, and also, a palimpsest is a sign that you're a hoarder, maybe, and can't let go of the past, or maybe you can.

If I may put my two cents on this, I think nobody can completely let go the past, because our past is what makes us who we are today, but a palimpsest is a parchment from which someone scraped out the writings for rewriting over it, and this is a bit like the process of let the details of the past go, keeping what the past made of us. ;)
