The Over 20 Club

To start off the next 100 days of this freewriting journey right, we thought it a good idea to keep looking back a little bit.

Let me explain.

When we first started, just a few people were writing every day. And many of us were little tiny redfish or fairly small minnows. You know that means that our combined voting power was pretty low.

Many of the early freewrites had hardly any payout at all. Still, so many of you stuck with it and kept on writing. Thank you for that!!!

The Over 20 Club is a way to allow some of those long forgotten pieces to shine again and give the authors a way to get a bit of a payout.

Here is how it works:

  • I have a list of writers who have written at least 20 freewrites.
  • Every Monday, I will invite 5 authors to write a post showing us 3 or more freewrites they liked and are past their payout.
  • The writers have until Thursday evening to post their showcase post.
  • Several of us have committed to giving that post a 100% upvote.
  • Friday's prompt will have links to the showcase prompts and hopefully, many of you will give it an upvote as well.
  • It is up to the writers and the voters to participate - you are free to choose.

The First 5 Over 20 Club Invites Go to:

  1. @improv - the only writer who has participated every day!! Big shout out!
  2. @snook
  3. @felt.buzz
  4. @deaconlee
  5. @iyanpol12

You probably have met those 5 in your comment section already - they have been writing pretty much from the beginning. But you will be surprised how quickly you can also belong to the over 20 club!!

Prompt: paint

  • Set your timer for 5 minutes
  • Start writing
  • Use the hashtag #freewrite
  • Publish your piece (include a link to this post if you wish)

Copy and paste your URL into the comment section of the prompt post.

  • Or, if you don't want to publish your freewrite, just copy and paste as a comment under the prompt post.

If you don't know what a freewrite is, here is a link to the introduction post.

Here is @snooks excellent tutorial on how to join our freewrite adventure

And @improv's input:

Two things I do a little differently. I just type "timer" into google and it pops up a 5-minute timer. I also type directly into steemit. I also rarely use a photo, don't I? So that's three things.

Here are all the freewriters. Visit and make friends :)

Paint... Well I guess we're all painting really.. from one moment to the next... each walking around this life with paintbrushes in hand... each painting strokes and making our mark upon this land... We're painters. We each have the ability to paint any picture we choose... we each play this game that's impossible to lose... But it's not impossible to paint something that doesn't look so good. I think that we're all artists on the inside. It's just that many of us have covered that up and denied it and tried to pretend it's not true... We see others around us who's skills totally astound us and we then wander if we will ever be as good as them... so often this feeling of inferiority or 'not-enoughness' leads us to failing to even begin our journey to greatness and beyond. But we're still painting. We're just making a different masterpiece. Our lives are our masterpieces. We don't always remember that. I like to make sure I remember to be conscious about what I'm painting each day. What picture do I really wish to experience? What beautiful piece would I rather look back upon when my time is up and I'm ready to sit back and just enjoy the wonderful image I've spent so many years craftfully painting away at... It will contain the whole beauty of my life - My story, my family, my journey, my obstacles, trials, tribulations, successes, achievements ... everything... at the end of the day though it doesn't matter what your masterpiece looks like... if you don't like it, you will be able to paint another one... and another one..... and another.... you'll never have a final chance to paint something beautiful... you can always start a new and see what comes through next time.... so what view you happen to be presented with at the end of it all... knowing that you created it all.. you painted every stroke.... you were the sculptor that created it all. It was you.

written and timed to 5 mins using The most dangerous writing app

Thanks for creating this @mariannewest and @improv!!! So grateful <3

I really like that take on painting your life - and to be able to start over. And so very true - so many never start being creative because we listened to those who told us that we are not enough...

Yeah it's a sad story that runs in the lives of many... part of my work is helping people to turn that round and realise they can create anything they want in life :)

That's what I came here to do!

Thanks for everything :) I really appreciate you reading and commenting <3

That is such important work!! Will be fun to watch what you are going to do.

haha yayyyy I have A LOT of tricks up my sleeve... just wanna make a few friends here before I start revealing them ^_^

Thank you <3

Here's my last minute submission to this prompt. As usual, I did a combo of freewrite with The Most Dangerous Writing App.

Today daily prompt - paint. The first thing that pop into my head is actually paint.net. A program which is similar to Photoshop, but it's a simplified version of PS. I use this to edit my photos. My colleague taught me how to use PS before. But it's just too complicated for me to master it. There're too many keys, buttons and features. I just couldn't get it. Then I forgot who but it's someone I knew from Tsu who introduced me to paint.net. This is a super awesome program. I can do simple editing with it. The most important of all is paint.net is free to use. Just ask Mr Google and you will get to the page to download this program. I have been using this since and all my photos uploaded to Steemit via my laptop, paint.net is the one and only program I used to edit (if needed). Normally I don't do much editing as I am not a big fan of photo editing.

This is very late, but I always see these the morning after it is posted. Am I ok to join in as long as I get the freewrite done within 24hours of the prompt post? I didn't want to risk it as a post in case it is too late so this one is as a comment.

War Paint:
She sits before the mirror. Her hand shaking, the fear, pounding like a desperate fist against her chest. She doesn’t want to go. She can’t do it. Her breath comes in sharp rasping gasps. The bloods fills her ears with its deafening drum beat. War Drums. She feels hot panic rising in her chest. She grips the brush, her knuckles whiten with the effort. Dusted pink, the soft fibres caress her pale skin. The brush dances across her velvet cheeks, her soft downy skin left glowing pink. War Paint has many colours. Pink streaks on pale cheeks. Sunrise, new days, early spring flowers fighting the frost. Lipstick. She untwists the stick, its vibrant red head smears her lips. The soft, worn, ghostly lips, blaze with colour. Fire, anger, strength, sunset skies and summer fruits. Another mouth to form other words, to chat and laugh, to smile. Black lines hide these eyes. Thick stripes frame portals in pale blue. Bluebells in the shaded forest. Fearless, war paint embolden. Dark dancing lashes flutter with rippling joy. She sits before the mirror. Her hand no longer shaking. Someone else looks back from the mirror. She is ready.

You are never too late to the freewrites :) Some people are still posting to prompts from 50 days ago. The only time limit is if there is a prize like for day 100 and 101 - if you want to enter to win.
Otherwise, if you are doing the prompt from a few days ago, it is best to post the url to your post under the most recent prompt post so people can see it. I probably will see it in my replies - but most people will read and interact on the most recent prompt.
All good.
And really love your piece!! I think it is the truth for a lot of women. they put their face on...

Thanks @mariannewest and the lovely Freewriters!

Hey thanks everyone for the wonderful comments and warm welcome to the #freewrite group. I use to be an artist, I am an artist:

so, this is the perfect prompt for you!

A very familiar subject mater. lol Yes.

I'm sad I missed the prompts over the weekend (Happy 100th!), but here's my story for today's prompt!

Paint.

We CAN DO THIS?

Internet problems all day and still at work but here is my for today..
https://steemit.com/freewrite/@saffisara/paint-or-5-minutes-freewrite-day-102

Oh, thank you @mariannewest for the invitation. I will be taking part in this surely soon. Should we be checking old posts even those passed 7 days, or within 7 days? I would be giving 100% of my upvote to my choice which is worth $0.90-1.

It is up to you. Whatever you like to share. :)

If free writing is important to you, if you love it, then keep at it. Never meant to discourage anyone from writing, just was bringing awareness that there is cost involved. Upvoted

Your definition of "cost" is odd to me. (Speaking from what I remember of your last comment on a freewrite post).

I personally have made more money through freewrites and steemit than I have made at almost any other job I've done (with the exception of painting, which I hated doing, but made good money at). Of course I was a stay at home mom for over two decades, and I wasn't paid for that with $$$ at all... so... maybe I'm the wrong person to speak on this. I already "wasted" all that time not getting paid!

Freewriting costs me nothing other than time, which I was ALREADY 'spending' on other social media platforms that paid nothing. It benefits me in ways so far beyond the financial, that I can't even fathom how someone would put a monetary value on it.

I also can not understand how someone who puts a monetary value on every minute of their time would bother to go and waste it by leaving comments such as these on other people's posts. How much time did you waste reading enough of the post to have that insight in the first place?

Freewriting isn't even about making money for me. It is a FANFREAKINGTASTIC side benefit, but that's not what it's about. It has been about rediscovering my passion for writing. Feeling inspired and motivated again. Motivated to do something outside of myself that I find immense joy and satisfaction in. That is beyond priceless.

Was that your 5min "paint" free write (you mentioned painting)? lol, Cause awesome.

Haha, I guess this could be my extra bonus freewrite, eh? :)

If writing random comments is important to you, then keep it up. I certainly wouldn't want to discourage anyone from writing anything, even if it doesn't make sense. Half my freewrites don't make a whole lot of sense.

What had freewriting cost me?

Well, I now am writing again (every single day for the last three months). I have 'met' a whole bucket full of like minded idiots (no offense Snook and Byn, but I do mean you!), who seem pretty damn nice. I can't seem to shake them off, and they keep kindly upvoting the nonsense I churn out, and leave me encouraging comments when I am feeling down. I've earned steem power and STD that I have vested in this network. Oh, and one of my stories was selected by the Isle of Write to appear in a forthcoming Anthology (it was not a freewrite story, but as I explained above, if I hadn't been participating in this freewrite challenge every day I would never have written it).

I think I can live with those kind of costs...

But maybe not everyone can.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

sometimes monetary value has to be weighed against the gain of things that are priceless. I'm sorry you didn't read enough #freewrites to find that out. You have my sympathy.

BeNiceToPeople.jpg

Are you expecting upvotes for being nonsensical? @grantcardone

Please do me a huge personal favor and stay away from my blog where I'm struggling to get myself back into the swing of things after being sick for two months. You might stub your senses on nonsense challenges and fun and become even more nonsensical. Pretty sure that would be a dreadful thing for you.

And especially stay away from my daughter's blog cause she's just finishing 2 years of hell and walking into more real life challenges as I type ...

I'm trying to teach her that Steemit challenges and contests are the pathways into communities and friendships. I'm also trying to ease her into something consistent. And ...

... please just stay far away from me and mine! I promise to return the favor!

My entry for today: "The Paint Job that Never Was"

Wow! wow! wow! what a fantastic idea. Followed you and you got a regular freewriter. Please inform me about today's prompt.

not sure what you mean. You are posting under today's prompt.

You write for 5 minutes whatever comes to your mind from the word paint.

Now I have understood and commented below. Please do consider if it is late.

Congratulations @improv...very impressive! I love the idea of the over 20 club and can't wait to read all of them. Here is mine for today: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@whatisnew/day-102-5-minute-freewrite-monday-prompt-paint

https://steemit.com/freewrite/@wonderwop/red-roof-inn-texas

I'm still looking for a writing partner for day 💯 Option 3 We Write using Steemit Chat.

This family keeps growing. Welcome to our new members. I think you guys are the largest group I have witnessed join us on the same day/post :D

Its good to be a part of this one! Mine was fun to write, here :)

Welcome to the new freewriters! Have fun, as much as I do.
My freewrite for today.

Woohoo! Thanks for the shoutout! :D I wanted to freewrite "paint" today, but no ideas are coming up. Hopefully, I would have better luck with tomorrow's prompt. With regard to the over 20 club, I take it my past freewrites before this won't be counted? Haha! I know it won't but it's worth a shot. I think I've made about 10 total here, but only 1 (however tangent) for the current iteration haha!

So, here is the tactic when it comes to freewriting. Set your timer and just go.

It could go like this - Paint, I have no idea what to say about paint because I don't like to paint and I don't like paintings. so, I am going to write about trees.....

or even start writing: I don't know what to write, I don't know what to write......

And before you know it, something pops into your brain. Then you just go with it. The trick is not to stop and to think. That is what gets us into trouble. Then we start judging ourselves....

And if the result is something you don't want to be a post on your profile, just post it as a comment here....

And you are right. You are at count 1 - and that is a wonderful start. Before you know it, you will be in the over 20 club :)

That's a great tactic! It's something I often forget, since I created fully-fleshed out stories before. I feel like I'm letting myself down if I create something beneath what I did before. But, this is my year of being resilient, so I need to loosen up and just let the words flow. Thanks for the reminder!

You are welcome. And freewrites are for letting go - they can be the beginning of a fully fleshed out story, but the idea really is to be spontaneous, to just write and surprise ourselves with what our crazy minds might come up with lol

If you would get a chance to read my cracker one, you'd be surprised to find that it's already a fully fleshed out story hahahaha! I guess the ideas flowed for me there when I was trying to just let loose.

I will. I try to read them all and vote on them all. I am just behind and now have to go and do some real life stuff.
I will leave you a comment :)

Thanks for stopping by my story! :D

So I kinda strayed from the prompt... just a tiny bit. :D
(Please don't blame me, I know anything about paintings.)

Here's today's continuation! :D
https://steemit.com/freewrite/@svashta/wild-west-part-21-5-minute-freewrite-challenge

I wonder how far this story will go... Because by the looks of it.. It only just well began.

I agree. It feels just like the beginning!
I think you need to figure out chapter breaks on the once you did and put them into a few chapter posts - or you are going to have 2 meters of links to previous posts before you get to the new one...

seeing my name on the list is just motivating! thank you for acknowledging my participation. This is really a great and creative mental exercise for me. Thank you @mariannewest. Here's my entry for today:

https://steemit.com/freewrite/@rhei86/day-102-5-minute-freewrite-monday-prompt-paint

This is my first time posting in freewrite. Thank you for providing this opportunity.

Congrats to the first 5... especially @improv !!! wow, writing every single day for more than 100 days now... This is a RECORD!

Well, it has been a very long time since I was a member of the Under 20 Club, so I suppose someone had to bring it up at some point! Oh, to be 18 again! But enough about being old and decrepit. Back to freewriting, I think I have done every freewrite since number 27. I will have a flick back and have a look at some of my favourites...

Meanwhile, if Dr Who had a real job, instead of wasting his time saving the universe...

Don't worry, I'm not trying to destroy the freewrite group tonight. I'm painting the house instead. I do, however, advise you to sleep with one eye open.

That is why I am so tired and am making all kinds of mistakes!!! 🤪

Hahaha, don't worry. This set of stories is about to finish, so that some fresh ideas can surface.

Sorry for the late submission and my apologies that i have been absent for so long due to work commitments.. here is my piece

never be sorry!! We are always happy to see you when you can write with us.

Hello!!!

This was a very fun prompt, here is my entry. :) :P :D

Nice, @jedau is here. Looking forward to seeing what he does.

Here is mine, I’d love to edit it a bit cause I feel it could be more powerful but I try not to be a perfectionist with these. This will make it into s longer story eventually.
