Day 462: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: local derby

in freewrite •  6 years ago

"Want to go to the derby? I'm in it." Joyce was one of the most introverted persons I'd ever met. Long brown hair that she wore covering her face, very soft voice, couldn't look anyone in the eye.

"I don't know. Where is it?" I was notoriously unwilling to go very far to do anything at all. I hated the time it took to get places and back, so everything had to be local.

"It's over at the Rod and Gun club, in that huge field in front. Please come." It was unusual for Joyce to ask for anything so I agreed, even though it would be a 15 minute drive to get there. Half an hour wasted in transit. yuck.I had no idea what a derby even was, but was afraid asking her to explain would be taxing for her so I figured I'd just show up.

So I get there, and there are twenty old beat up cars in the field. Somebody shoots a gun and off the cars go. They start careening into each other! It's vicious! Not at all what I was expecting. One car in particular was lethal in its intent. I was worried for Joyce!

At the end, when only one car was left working, my dear Joyce stepped out of it.
