A lackluster first Community Day in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Today was the first "Community Day" in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Basically the game gives some special bonuses during a particular time period, and the idea is that people will tend to congregate and can play together if they want to. I haven't gone out for the past few community days in Pokemon Go, but for the ones I did go out for were pretty good even though I'm not much of a social player, so I wanted to see how one would go in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. My experience was somewhat disappointing.

I decided to drive to Alton Baker Park, since that's my favorite park for playing Wizards Unite. There didn't seem to be a lot of activity. I have never tried the "Dark Detector" mechanic in the game, which supposedly increase spawns and the level of spawns around an inn, so I decided today would be a good day to try it. Most of the traces I was seeing were the same low-level traces you frequently encounter, such as the basic Hogwarts students.

I did encounter one trace I had never seen before, Omnioculars.

Other than mine, I didn't see any Dark Detectors activated on any inns. I get the impression not a lot of people were playing, or at least weren't playing where I was. I did notice one couple who looked like they were probably also playing the game, but I didn't interact with them much other than to exchange a greeting. It is possible I just picked the wrong park, or the wrong part of the one I was in.

Overall I think there wasn't a strong enough game-mechanical focus to make this event feel special. In Pokemon Go they use community days to release now "shiny" variants of pokemon into the game and the ones you catch have a special move. In the Wizards Unite game the only thing that might have been different was a greater frequency of spawns, the "free gift" in the in-game store, and the bonuses for brain elixirs and dark detectors. It didn't feel much different than playing as usual. So for me it seemed like a lackluster event. However, the early Pokemon Go community days weren't perfect, either, so maybe they'll improve things in the future. And other people may have had a more engaging experience than I did.
