Damsel by Screwtape Studios is nominated for Australian Game of the Year and Independent Game of the Year at the Australian Games Awards (The AGAs). Gamers Classified previously reviewed this title. While is PAXAUS 2018, we also spoke with Screwtape Studios Co-founder and Damsel Developer, Megan Summers, about the creative process behind this title. We caught up with Megan once more to discuss her reaction to being nominated and Screwtape Studios' shift away from mobile games.

GC: What was your reaction to receiving two nominations?
Megan Summers: We were totally surprised and excited when we realised we had been nominated for the Best Australian Developed Game. It's been a great year for Australian developers and it feels great being nominated. I honestly didn't think we would be nominated for any other category. It wasn't something we had even hoped for, it feels surreal to have been nominated for the Best Indie Game of the Year.GC: Damsel is also nominated for the Indie Scene award at the Dash Awards. What do you think has made this game so popular with the audience?
Megan Summers: The Dash Award was another surprise for sure. I think because we are able to play whatever we want these days, we are finding that there are gamers out there who want shorter gameplay times but with as much intensity as a AAA game. We don't always have time to play 5 hours a night. Damsel was designed to have players jump in and play a few short rounds.GC: This is Screwtape Studios' first major title. What prompted you to move away from mobile games?
Megan Summers: We moved away from mobile development because we felt that we were being stifled by the monetisation models on Mobile and weren't enjoying creating games any more. Although if we hadn't cut our teeth for as long as we had we wouldn't have been able to make Damsel.
GC: Anything else you would like to add?
Megan Summers: We would love to thank the Australian and Brisbane Game communities, especially Truna, we've been talking about Damsel for a long time :) I'd also like to Thank Morgan, Dan and Kim from Defiant Development the support and advice has meant the world to us.To purchase Damsel, visit damselgame.net or the Steam store.
