Mega Man X4 Masochist Challenge Part 07

This took me a few days to get right, but it was fun all the way through. Split Mushroom's stage is one of those stages that make challenges like these fun for me. I spent most of the time just messing around and finding the optimal routes, as opposed to agonizing during the attempts themselves. The actual execution took many attempts, yes, but most of the time I just treated this thing as a playground where I got to play scientist, looking for the optimal routes to avoid damage.

I think I found a pretty good one here. I had another one, as well, but I wasn't happy with the recording, so I went back to the drawing board.

The stairwell parts look harder than they are; like in most X games, the enemies and hazards are never random, so it's not pure reaction skill as much as it is just route-planning.

Those graphics, though, man. They can really screw with your eyes and cause a migraine.

The enemy placement in general in this stage mainly serves as a way to hinder X's speed, so it was never really about avoiding damage, but just finding the fastest way to go.

I could have done better during the ladder climb in the third segment, however. I chose the easy way out and just climbed the ladder, even though I obviously could have done some zigzagging off of the platforms next to the ladder. But not everything can be perfect.

The elevator segment brings back ugly memories from X3, and Capcom's fetish for drawn-out elevator segments in that game, but thankfully, this is the only in X4.

I can't climb the walls, so there's nothing I really do to speed things up. It serves as a breather after the hectic previous segments.

Split Mushroom is actually one of my favorite bosses in the entire game, and one of my favorites in the X series as a whole. Just fun to mess with.

Unfortunately for Split Mushroom, not only is he modeled after a mushroom, which is just hideously uncool, he reminds me of Serges from X2 in the sense that he has godawful hit detection. A lot of his attacks focus on contact damage, but his hit detection can't deal contact damage to save its life.

As long as you concentrate - and by concentrate, I mean keeping at least one of your eyes open and halfway paying attention to what's happening - and keep track of which is the real Mushroom and which is the copy, the battle is basically a freebie in this run.

Still a very fun freebie, though.

I was just amazed and happy that megaman games are still alive today. I always remember the older daya of playing it at mp5. and smacking it down trying to defeat the bosses:D
