Dragon Age: Inquisition on my 3rd playthrough

in gaming •  2 years ago

As I mentioned before I have already played through this game 2x before and this is my first foray into playing my main as a warrior-tank. I can't really say that I am enjoying it more as a warrior since generally speaking that is my least favorite type of character to play in any game, but it is still a lot better of an experience than playing a lot of the other games that I have in my library.

There are always talks about Bioware making another installment of the Dragon Age name, but nothing concrete yet. I hope they can pull it off and at the same time manage to not completely screw it up like everyone else seems to be doing right now.

One thing I will say about Inquisition is that this game is friggin huge.

As a warrior I wouldn't say that I really have much of a strategy other than to head into battles and use my major skills as often as the cooldowns will allow me. Since there isn't a dodge mechanism in this game at all really, you don't have much of a choice other than simply take the damage as it comes to you and hope that your heavy armor, that only you and other warriors can possibly wear, is going to bear the grunt of the damage. In that regard this game is rather simplistic because if you get wiped in a battle, there is a very good chance that a different strategy isn't really going to make that much of a difference: You simply don't yet have good enough stats to emerge victorious in that area yet and you need to come back later.

As I mentioned before this game is absolutely massive. Each of those dots on the map indicate, for the most part, and area that you can wander around in and inside of each of them, there are dozens of side quests that you can complete for XP and other rewards. Sadly, most of the rewards are rather garbage and the best gear that you can get in the game is either given to you at the start (after a complete playthrough) or you have to craft it. The crafting aspect of it is a nice touch but can become a bit cumbersome since doing so results in tons of travel and walking around of the main city called "Haven" in order to make that happen

This could be considered a waste of time by many people because it isn't actually necessary to defeat almost all aspects of the game. For me, I don't mind doing it but I can't figure out a "tally list" of necessary materials in order to be able to make a certain type of armor or weapon that I want to build. One of the worst aspects of this game is spending all that time walking to a crafting station only to arrive there and then realize that you are 2 iron short of being able to make the thing that you want to make.

I really think they could have made this part of the game easier / more fun if a player could simply warp in and warp out of this area. It's not like there is anything that is going to attack you in between, it is just a bunch of senseless walking though NPC-filled markets.

I think the thing that I like so much about this game is that it is very casual. You of course can make it more complicated by stepping up the difficulty and using the turn-based attacks during every battle, but this is going to make an already very long game, even longer. For the most part battles can be won simply by approaching a mob of enemies and putting your tank or tanks on the group, do a taunt shout, and then change control back to either a mage or a ranger from far away. If you don't win by using this method, or the enemies 1 or 2 hit kill you, it is strictly because of the fact that your party is too low of a level to be in this situation in the first place.

I can easily put several hours in a row into this game while lying down on the sofa because while it is quite an easy game, it is as huge and involved as you want it to be. For someone that just wants to blaze through the main story, about 90% of the quests that you are offered are completely optional and don't really result in great rewards anyway.

I'm going to play this all the way through even though I already know what the ending is. It's just a time sink, I know that, but these days I am more into casual gaming experiences and for anyone out there that considers themselves to be a casual gamer and hasn't played this one yet, know this: The controls are quite complicated and you will be expected to know the entire layout of the controller in order to play it. There aren't very many situations where hitting the wrong button is going to result in defeat though and when your party gets wiped out, the backtracking is normally not very far at all.

And having said that I am now going to run off and play a few more hours of it until I get hungry.
