Something went wrong with our acorn squash plant!steemCreated with Sketch.

This had had the white spots on it I posted about earlier, which turned out to be powdery mildew. So, I removed the affected leaves so it wouldn't spread, but it seems to have "fallen over" -- perhaps I took the leaves too close to the stem, removing the supporting "leaf stem"?

Any ideas what to do at this point? It has a nice squash that's pretty much ready (protected under the plastic container in the first picture), and three or four others.

One smaller one was found chewed, so now that the woodchuck's gone there's still something getting in. Electric fence going up soon.

The garden is in a woodsy spot so could be any variety of critters in there. I don't think the leaf removal was the issue. Something attacked it!

I would have loved to have an idea on how you can solve the problem, but i don't. sorry about that.

Wouldn't have a clue... But it looks kinda dead the way it's hanging on the ground...

nice post,upvoted

Unfortunately, i have no idea , always was learning something new about gardening from you :)

And if you dilute laundry soap in water, and just water the plant with this solution? Any aphids perish at once. A plant can then be washed with running water.

Nice idea. I need to spray neem oil on them, which one mixes with soap so that the oil emulsifies; otherwise, "oil and water don't mix". Perhaps just the soap would be useful, I'll consider that.

I also need to add the kelp/seaweed liquid to the next time I water; I had lost it, but found it yesterday.

I wish you to solve this problem as soon as possible.

good luck.. fence should keep the critters out!

I just hacked back some of my plants due to the mildew and a couple did this but have now perked back up. It could just be the stress affects the plant and as long as it is still sufficiently strong it might bounce back.

Hope so! It looks worse today, I'm considering harvesting the remaining smaller acorn squash tomorrow...

Sometimes you do have to just cut the losses and take what you can get.

Yeah, that's what I did. I'll make a post later today, took some sad pictures. But then got a cucumber, and several cherry and grape tomatoes, so one picture looks like a harvest smile (it's on a "Homer" bucket lid).

Hmmmm not too sure about that one. Perhaps do you have stem boring bugs in your area?

Those bugs just drone on and on, and the stems get bored and decide to give it up? :)

No, not that I know of.

Post of the day.i love you blog.i resteem your post.

Nice that you have some squash but not good that something else is eating them! Hopefully you can get it figured out! Thanks for the post!

Only so many things that makes a plant wilt; water (too much, too little) and fungal disease.

@libertyteeth, Get a lot of rain recently?

Yes, lots of storms last week. In fact, the storms might be responsible for the "apple tree growing out of a log" that was destroyed recently.

We have been getting hammered with rain as well. I have a truck load of branches to burn from the wind pruning my maple trees, all from last week. I have a few large trees that have mystery plants growing out of the nodes..lol

Speaking of apple trees, two of mine have a disease and both have already dropped the leaves. Might require chemical spray and in that case - they'll be wood chips for my smoker before that happens.😎 They are not looking anything like the "happy trees" Bob Ross was painting!

Nice reference! I subscribe to the YouTube channel "Today I Found Out", which did a piece on Bob Ross recently (last few months(?); time is a mystery to those with concussions...). Did you know he was missing a piece of his finger (like Jerry Garcia!), and hid it under the pallette?

Our perhaps-overly-pruned apple tree has worms in it, so it'll be smoking fuel soon as well.

I did not know that Bob was missing part of his finger! I watched him paint as a kid and he was so hypnotizing that he could entrap viewers that had no intentions of watching but just couldn't look away. I was a PBS kid..haha I still watch Bob Ross videos and now with my kids.

I knew that "Gar" had a piece of finger missing, but I can't remember ever hearing Bob..haha had a few concussions myself. I inherited a dense skull though, thanks Dad. 😆

:) Yeah, the "Today I Found Out" piece mentioned that he almost never showed it on camera, using the palette to keep it out of view.

Jerry Garcia, though, he strummed with that hand, so would have been difficult to hide. Did you know that he lost that part of his finger in an accident, and then was able to develop his own musical style because of it? I find that fascinating! He used the stub of that finger to hold the pick to his palm, so he could very quickly switch between strumming and plucking.

I saw them in 1994, I was poor and had to decide between them and Pink Floyd. I think I made the right decision, as Jerry was gone a year later, and Pink Floyd is still touring (albeit, minus Roger Waters). Or at least, was then, I haven't really followed their careers in some time.

Anyway here's that "Today I Found Out", which is under 12 minutes:

I saw Black Sabbath and got to meet Tony Iommi (from 10 feet away, between major security detail..lol) and he was another one that created a new style - he used candle wax on his fingers to be able to play and later plastic finger tips:

He adapted his own playing style and never let it stop him. Have to admire people like that! Hard not to!

Never got to see Garcia, but I've been to Haight & Ashbury 😉 and what an experience! I'll have to dig up some photos..Good Times!!

I've gotta watch that Bob Ross Video now..haha thank you!!!!!!

You're welcome! You reminded me of another concert I attended.

I drove for Domino's pizza, and met my wife there (although we didn't get together for decades afterwards!). One night I was coming home, listening to WBCN (104.1 in Boston, now defunct), and they were doing some giveaway, as I was parking. So I came inside and called, and I was the correct caller!

The guy said, "You're caller number [whatever], do you know what you won?" I started to respond, saying, "No, I don't remember when the date was, but it was [band name]" -- and, he hung up after I said "No, I don't"!

So I called them back, and talked to Larry "Chachi" Loprett, the "Vice President in charge of giving things away", who said those tickets were all gone, but I could have two tickets to anything I wanted.

So, I said Jethro Tull, which was having their 25th anniversary tour. Still have the t-shirt! :)

I took my girlfriend's friend's younger sister, and we sat in the front row, at Great Woods. Ian Anderson came out into the audience, right next to me, playing the flute. I stood up and reached out and put my right arm on his right shoulder, wanting to say something like "you're awesome" but no words were making themselves available, and security came running up -- they grabbed him, and threw him up onto the stage; didn't touch me at all!

I'd imagine, these days, that would be different.

Anyway, that's my "brush with greatness" story. :)

I think it's neat that Tony Iommi used finger protection; I've played guitar in the past, and it always destroys my fingers, and I never practiced enough to get callouses.

Watched the Bob Ross vid twice already..haha I now understand why I knew only what I saw from tv. He was a mysterious guy! I would have certainly never guessed (ever) that he served in the military, especially not as a hard nose. I'm shocked.

Bob will be deeply missed. The world could use another one of him.

Agreed! I didn't watch him a whole lot, but I do remember really enjoying those times that I did, as a child. It's so neat to now be exploring my artistic creative side. I should see if I can find his shows.

A its not easy with a garden sometimes.... :-/

oh how did that happen ??

Good question! @grow-pro asked a potentially insightful question, whether we had a lot of rain recently, which we did. Awaiting his answer here... :)

All my greens died, including my very favorite varieties of pepper plants. The reason is easy; unusually hot weather. No worries, I'm thinking of some new plans. Aloha

Ouch, sorry to hear! My good friend @fishyculture said she lost everything to grasshoppers this year.

Harvested the squash today, will do a post with pictures later today.
