The Brave browser lets you control whom you pay while browsing. If you think that browsing is free think again, we are paying through our attention to advertisements and data are sniffed so all that free websites are not really free. Similar to IOTA is not offering free transactions as you have to pay with your CPU power. (IOTA rant off).
If you install the Brave browser you can claim free BAT tokens in the Browser if you visit https://brave.com/download/ (Install and click around, import your bookmarks from your other browser and you will see a banner saying get free tokens, click on it, activate brave payments and click on CLAIM Free Tokens.

What is the benefit of paying publishers, does it just get them to adopt the BAT token? I guess I don't understand the purpose of paying out your personal BAT token to publishers

The power behind Brave is retaining not having mass data collected on your. The Brave browser blocks almost all the advertising/tracking on a page.
Paying content creators for good content vs page views an idea I like. You can consume content and reimburse the producer for not being blasted with ads, pop ups, and tracking scripts. If you use it on mobile you really have faster load times and consume less data.

if everything was paid content, the content would be much better. free content wont be as good as paid content in my opinion. you can see the effects with steem. we pay with our attention and voting power. content creators get real $ out of it, if they exchange for btc than to fiat. content without advertisement is much better in terms of privacy etc. we are paying with our data, identities for the "free" content. so i strongly believe in concepts like STEEMit or BAT

The original concept of Brave was a noble and ambitious one: Fix the World Wide Web's awful advertisement business. The method was to be to block the existing intrusive ads and trackers, replace them with less intrusive ads, and split the ad revenue between the content creators, the browser developers, and the users. It seems however that this feature has been delayed, and currently it works a bit differently.
So here's what it currently does: All ads and trackers are blocker, and while you browse the Web, BAT are transferred from your wallet to the content creators whose content you consume. You set up a monthly budget for how much BAT you want to distribute among them.
There are currently two ways to get BAT:
And I suppose you could set your monthly budget to 0 and instead sell all your earned BAT, but I feel that would be completely against the spirit of the browser.
Now personally I think all of this could be better solved by building an extension for existing browsers instead of an entirely new browser. If you want to support creators without changing your browsing habits, have a look at the Flattr extension available for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera (with this helpful extension).

yes I am aware of flattr. but i think changing the world needs a new browserr too. browsser are multi billion dollar businesses as 50% of our daily traffic goes through browsers. thus there is a lot money to be earned, if we can channel the money more effectively and cut out the data kraken middlemans, it will be all better for us.

I probably should start using the brave browser rather than chrome as it already has an ad blocker and blocks trackers. I'll probably download it now.
