They say that the way to tell the difference between a Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine is by the pinecones. The points on the Ponderosa cone stick out so as to poke your fingers while the Jeffrey points curl under enough to not be pokey.
"Prickly Pondarosa – gentle Jeffrey." Honestly, it can be tough to tell.
The tree in the forefront of the photo actually has shorter needle sets so possibly it's a Sugarpine?
