The greatest of the big apes, gorillas live in the deep forests of Central Africa. These gentle giants eat mostly leaves, fruits, and stems; they are mostly herbivores. Living in close-knit family groups, they are commanded by a dominant male silverback who is in charge of the troop's security and welfare. Gorillas are extremely clever animals that use a sophisticated system of gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations to communicate. Gorillas, despite their impressive stature and power, are mainly calm animals that prefer to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, poaching, habitat degradation, and diseases spread by people are just a few of the many dangers that gorillas must contend with. The fate of these amazing primates and the ecosystems they live in depends on conservation initiatives.
