I love chia seeds

in gym •  6 years ago  (edited)

My gym trainer told me, back when I first started working out, that a very good addition to my diet would be chia seeds. He stated that the Aztec warriors would a handful before a battle to power up for an hour or so.

Initially I laughed, because chia pets were on TV commercials all the time when I was a kid.

But I have found that 2 or 3 scoops about an hour before the gym does wonders for my energy levels. I get less dizzy or worn out when I eat these seeds.

Nutrional Facts

Chia seeds on average contain 6% water, 42% carbohydrates, 16% protein, and 31% fat. The fatty acids in chia seeds are highly unsaturated, with the major fats being linolenic acid (50–57% of total fat) and linoleic acid (17–26%). The seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and the B vitamins thiamin and niacin.

How to eat them

First of all, DO NOT COOK THEM unless you want to spend a lot of time on clean up.

They will stick like little concrete specks to anything they come into contact with.

Because I am lazy, I use plastic cups to mix them with other foods...so I can throw those away afterwards rather than spending 10 minutes scrubbing.

  • You can eat them straight up. Chase them with a liquid for sure. They will leave a mild fishy taste in your mouth.

  • Mix them in with sunflower seeds and eat them straight up. The salty flavor of the seeds covers any fishy taste.

  • Add them to oatmeal. After experimenting with is, it is just as easy to mix them into cooked oatmeal and save yourself the mess of cooking them into the oatmeal.

  • Peanut butter and avocado mash up with them nicely.

  • In fact, my breakfast lately has been a tablespoon of peanut butter, a banana, 2 or 3 scoops of chia seeds, a little OJ...all mashed up in a plastic cup

  • Pour some milk or almond milk in with a couple of scoops, add a little cinnamon or nutmeg (or pumpkin pie spice), and let it sit for awhile.

I use these

BetterBody Foods Organic Chia Seeds, Non-GMO, Great Taste, 2 Pound

This usually lasts me 6 weeks to 2 months, and is pretty cheap.

The ubiquitous pic

A version of this pic is in about every TexMex restaurant on 7th Street. I love it. Since we started talking about Aztec warriors, I threw it in ;>

Chia seeds are awesome, and gaining in popularity. I see them being mentioned more and more.

Because I am lazy, I use plastic cups to mix them with other foods...so I can throw those away afterwards rather than spending 10 minutes scrubbing.

Not that it's a competition, but I'm lazier than you. I just buy the bottled chia beverage at the grocery store. Easy and filled with chia seeds, throw away when gone! ;)

I have to admit that I almost laughed in my trainer's face when he borught them up

I'm glad I didn't, because I look like a fool enough in the normal course of the day ;>

Those fruit juices look interesting...one thing chia seeds do is absorb the flavor of the foods they are mixed with!

His job is to be your trainer after all, it was probably best to listen to him instead of laugh at him lol.

Try it sometime! It's tasty! :)

I just might bring him a Trump chia head tho...

;>

If Trump chia heads are his thing, go for it! ;D

Nice post. I keep falling in and out of love with them but I should probably be more consistent. Great product recommendation too by the way, ~$9 is great for 2 pounds of chia!

if you can avoid the fishy aspect, they are the best thing for diets outside of willpower...which I aint got lol

While blackcurrants are in season here I make a wonderful after workout smoothie with blackcurrants, banana, chia seeds and hemp milk. Delicious!

hemp milk is something I'll have to research, but the rest sounds good fer sure!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I make my own hemp milk, just hemp seeds and water. It's delicious and decidedly nutritious. I made a post on it a few months back in case you are interested in making your own;)

worth a try one day

not sure whther to be sad or not there's no THC...never was a big pot user (social user); always liked my booze more

Wish you were close enough that I could give you the pound of organic ones I have. I also heard they were a wonder food and after being told about all the miracles the tiny seeds had to offer I stocked up. That fishy taste? ICK. No can do...

that fishy taste...Miss FISHYculture ;)...actually disappears when mixed into other food; the other food doesnt even have to be that strong

the problem can come with the little bits stuck between your teeth afterwards; I'll notice a hint of the fishy taste...but I'm more worried about breathing it on other folks than on me lol

honestly, when I mix them in with sunflower seeds i don't even get the fish taste :)

I will give that a try. I LOVE aquaponics. I do not like fish... so it goes... lol!

rofl ;>

I guess you can always eat the veggies!

aquaponics is interesting to me, but right before i was going to put up the tnks, the creek down the hill flooded so bad that it WOULD have wasted the entire setup, so I decided against doing it ;>

Woah, that would have sucked! We don't have a system any more either, but we live in a rather fishy culture so I kept the name...

lol

I keep building my perfect sustainability project in my head, but i'm not anywhere near where I can put it into place

We played "prepper" for over ten years. I took a year off. It turns out there is nothing noble or righteous about doing EVERYTHING the hardest way I can think of. Did you know you can BUY eggs? Right there in the store. And chicken, too.
Seriously, we learned some GREAT skills and we will continue to garden and I will probably get back into chickens some day but for now... It is nice to have no critters counting on me except my cows and my husband!

well, as long as you don't forget to feed the cows...

;>

I think that if things start going bad, there will be time/notification enough to get the things you will need

it would be NICE to already be prepared, but as you say, storebought eggs can be nice too!
