Suicide Rate in Nigeria now 5th in the world

in health •  6 years ago  (edited)

Suicide is when a person takes his life. In some countries this is considered as a crime. It is not a common occurrence and relatives or friends of the victim are known to be most times in shock because of the incident. Most people who have committed suicide have been victims of depression, rejection or lack self esteem. In the past it was thought to be less prevalent in societies with strong family ties.
In Nigeria for instance, it used to be a rare and strange thing to hear about suicide. The common saying was that we loved our lives too much to think of taking it.

Recently, a WHO survey ranked Nigeria as 5th in the world suicide ratings. Thus almost came as a shock to me especially when I checked out the other countries on the list. But upon recollection, I noticed there has recently been lots of suicide and murder stories recently in the news.

Well, what could have gone wrong? I asked myself. Well all I could think of was increase in social media activities, increased addiction to mobile devices and harsh economic situations. We now hear of men who are tired of life because they can no longer support their families or meet up with their personal or social responsibility. People who commit suicide because they feel unloved due to social media attacks and lack of understanding from family. The list goes on and on.

We need stronger family ties and build better physical relationships to help curb this ugly trend.
