The Ethics of Gene Editing: Where Do We Draw the Line?

in health •  2 years ago

How far do we go in our quest to create 'perfect' humans?

Imagine we were able to take the human genome and edit it, and then use it to produce a completely new generation of children. Would you have kids using these genetically modified people?

The idea of modifying the human genome is nothing new. It has been talked about since the early days of CRISPR gene editing.

With a tool that allows us to easily target specific parts of the genome, researchers are taking it one step further and altering the DNA. This isn't an easy process, though.

Here is where we draw the line. While genetic modification is still fairly new, it has proven its worth time and time again. For example, why is the most successful species on Earth, the human, made of 99% DNA and 1% genes from other species?

The technology will continue to evolve and with it, so must we. We must define the limits to ensure we don't destroy entire species.

As we continue to learn and advance our knowledge of the human genome, the answer to the question of 'where do we draw the line?' will become clearer. I hope you enjoyed this article.
